RA in Mechanics of Batteries (Fixed Term) - Cambridge

Lithium ion batteries with solid state electrolytes are prone to degradation by a range of mechanisms including dendrite formation, void formation and swell-induced fatigue and micro-cracking. The topology of the battery plays a role over a number of length scales, from macro scale geometry of battery to the microstructural scale of the mixing of the negative electrode in the electrolyte. Topology has a major effect both on performance and on the failure mechanisms.

A Hidden Convexity in Continuum Mechanics, with application to classical, continuous-time, rate-(in)dependent plasticity

Amit Acharya

A methodology for defining variational principles for a class of PDE models from continuum mechanics is demonstrated, and some of its features explored. The scheme is applied to quasi-static and dynamic models of rate-independent and rate-dependent, single crystal plasticity at finite deformation.

Folding, stowage, and deployment of composite thin-walled lenticular tubes

This paper presents an integrated experimental and numerical investigation of the dynamic deployment behavior of Composite thin-walled lenticular tube (CTLT) that wraps around a central hub, with emphasis on the effect of long-term storage. The deployment experiments were performed on the CTLT prototype both before and after it had been stowed for extended storage periods. The results indicate that after being stowed for 6 and 10.5 months the CTLT is deployed slower and the deployment time increases by 8.2% and 15.0%, respectively.
