ICTAM 2024, Mini-Symposia on Soft matter, theory meets experiment

The 26th International Congress of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (ICTAM2024) will be held in Daegu, Korea, on August 25-30, 2024 (http://www.ictam2024.org). ICTAM congresses are organized under the auspices of the International Union of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (IUTAM) and traditionally gather the mechanics community from around the world every four years.

PhD opening at UCLA

The Mechanics of Soft Materials Lab (https://www.msm.seas.ucla.edu/) at UCLA has a PhD opening to be filled in 2023 fall. The successful candidate is expected to work on modeling, simulations, and experiments of soft materials, soft tissue and soft machines. The ideal candidates will be highly motivated with a strong background in solid mechanics and computation, and be fluent in spoken and written English.

There is an immediate opening of a postdoctoral researcher in the Mechanics of Soft Materials Lab (https://www.msm.seas.ucla.edu/) in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). The research will be on additive manufacturing of soft materials and soft machines. The successful candidate should have a PhD degree with expertise in experimental polymer materials.

Bifurcation Diagrams for the Formation of Wrinkles or Creases in Soft Bilayers

Subject to compression, elastic materials may undergo bifurcation of various kinds. A homogeneous material forms creases, whereas a bilayer consisting of a stiff film and a compliant substrate forms wrinkles. Here, we show several new types of bifurcation behavior for bilayers consisting of films and substrates of comparable elastic moduli. Depending on the ratios of moduli and thicknesses of the two materials, the critical strain for the onset of creases can be either smaller or larger than that for the onset of wrinkles.
