Applied Mechanics Division Student Competition

The ASME AMD Division sponsors the Applied Mechanics Division Student Competition in Track 7 and Track 12, generously funded by the Haythornthwaite Foundation. Full-time students working on a project, thesis, or dissertation that is at a readiness for presentation at IMECE are encouraged to apply. 

2024 Thomas J. R. Hughes Young Investigator Award – Professor Diego Misseroni

The Executive Committee of the ASME Applied Mechanics Division is pleased to congratulate Professor Diego Misseroni, Department of Civil, Environmental and Mechanical Engineering, University of Trento, Trento, Italy, as the recipient of the 2024 Thomas J. R. Hughes Young Investigator Award.

2024 Ted Belytschko Applied Mechanics Award – Professor Xue Feng

The Executive Committee of the ASME Applied Mechanics Division is pleased to congratulate Professor Xue Feng, Changjiang Professor, Department of Engineering Mechanics, Tsinghua University, as the recipient of the 2024 Ted Belytschko Applied Mechanics Award. This award, which includes a medal, a certificate, and an honorarium, will be presented at the AMD Honors and Awards Banquet, during the 2024 ASME International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition (IMECE 2024), to be held during November 17 – 21, 2024, at the Oregon Convention Center, Portland, OR.

Applied Mechanics Division – Haythornthwaite Foundation Research Initiation Grants 2023

With funding from the Haythornthwaite Foundation, the Executive Committee (EC) of the Applied Mechanics Division (AMD) of ASME is pleased to announce the establishment of the Haythornthwaite Research Initiation Grant Program, targeting university faculty engaged in research in theoretical and applied mechanics that are at the beginning of their academic careers. Applicants must hold a tenure‐track appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor at a US university on October 1, 2023, and must not be more than 5 years beyond receipt of their doctoral degree at the time

Zdeněk P. Bažant Medal

The Zdeněk P. Bažant Medal was established in 2022 by the Applied Mechanics Division and recognizes an individual who has made significant contributions to the field of mechanics through research, practice, teaching and/or outstanding leadership. For details, please go to: Zdeněk P. Bažant Medal

USNC/TAM Distinguished Lecture by John Rogers and 2022 Newsletter

Dear member,

I am delighted to extend an invitation to attend the next US National Committee of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (USNC/TAM) Distinguished Lecture to be delivered by Professor John Rogers of Northwestern University. The event will take place in-person, at the National Academies in Washington DC, and online (Zoom Live Stream) on May 5th, 2023, 5-6 PM ET. AMD Award Banquet during IMECE 2022

Applied Mechanics Division of ASME will celebrate its traditional awards banquet on Nov 1 (Tuesday) during IMECE 2022. This year’s banquet is more special than other years. In addition to the regular awards related to AMD, this year two ASME medals, Melville medal and ASME Honorary member will be recognized.

Professor Pradeep Sharma will give a Plenary Lecture for Track 7 Dynamics, Vibration and Control at the IMECE Congress of the ASME in Columbus, OH, on Tuesday, November 1, 9:15AM - 10:00AM with title: Flexoelectricity and Electrets.
