The AMD-ASME Executive Committee is delighted to announce the 2020 recipients of the Haythornthwaite Research Initiation Grants, each to be awarded at $20,000. The five selected recipients are:

Applied Mechanics Division – Haythornthwaite Foundation Research Initiation Grants 2021

With funding from the Haythornthwaite Foundation, the Executive Committee (EC) of the Applied Mechanics Division (AMD) of ASME is pleased to announce the Haythornthwaite Research Initiation Grant Program, targeting university faculty engaged in research in theoretical and applied mechanics that are at the beginning of their academic careers. Applicants must hold a tenure‐track appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor at a US university on October 1, 2021, and must not be more than 5 years beyond receipt of their doctoral degree at the time the award

2021 Thomas K. Caughey Dynamics Award – Professor Michael P. Païdoussis

The Executive Committee of the ASME Applied Mechanics Division is pleased to announce and congratulate Professor Michael P. Païdoussis, Thomas Workman Emeritus Professor in Mechanical Engineering, McGill University, as the recipient of the 2021 Thomas K. Caughey Dynamics Award.

2021 Warner T. Koiter Medal – Professor Gerhard A. Holzapfel

The Executive Committee of the ASME Applied Mechanics Division is pleased to announce and congratulate Professor Gerhard A. Holzapfel, Professor of Biomechanics and head of the Institute of Biomechanics, Graz University of Technology in Austria, as the recipient of the 2021 Warner T. Koiter Medal.

A tribute to Arthur Peter “Art” Boresi

Dear Colleagues,

We mourn the death of Arthur Peter “Art” Boresi, professor emeritus of civil and architectural engineering at the University of Wyoming, Laramie, and formerly of theoretical and applied mechanics at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, who died February 15, 2021, at age 96 at Laramie.

Please find attached a tribute to Art, written by his colleagues James W. Phillips (UIUC), Richard J. Schmidt (U. of Wyoming) and Ken P. Chong (George Washington U).
