Recruiting PhD students to study Solid Mechanics at Harvard

Zhigang Suo's picture

Each year, several new students begin their studies of Solid Mechanics for PhD degrees at Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences.  The students come from all over the world.  We have no constraint on where they come from.

Faculty members in Solid Mechanics.   The School of Engineering and Applied Sciences is not divided into departments, but faculty do assemble into programs.  Faculty members directly responsible for the program of Solid Mechanics are

Please look at the above websites, and feel free to contact us for any question.

Application.  We will be delighted if you find that your interest matches ours.  In the application form, please check the “Solid Mechanics” box.  If you are interested in working with a particular professor, please list the name of the professor in your application.  In the statement of purpose, please indicate your experience or aspiration relevant to Solid Mechanics.  If you have done research, please tell us details.  Please mention in your statement of purpose the name of the professor and your reasons.  We read each statement of purpose with care, and look for good matches.  So, please help us.

Mentioning the name of a professor does not bind you with the professor.  You can choose to work with anyone at Harvard once you are here.

Admission.  Individual faculty members can make recommendations, but cannot determine which student to admit. All students are admitted through the Graduate Admissions Committee in the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, on a competitive basis.  Please learn more about application.  If you have any question regarding admission, please write to our Director of Graduate Admissions: Ms. Julie Holbrook, holbrook@seas.harvard.edu

Financial support.  Every PhD student receives a fellowship, which is sufficient to cover all expenses to study and live in Cambridge.  The fellowship, however, is rarely offered to a Master student.  If your final goal is to obtain a PhD degree at Harvard, you may not wish to apply for admission as a Master student.  Instead, you may apply for admission as a PhD student:  you only need a Bachelor degree to do so.

Your program of study.  We are flexible.  Once you come to Harvard, you and your advisor will work together to define a program of study specifically suitable to you.

If you absolutely cannot wait to plan ahead, here is what you need to get started.  The PhD degree requires that you take 10 courses.  You may look at the catalogue of courses at Harvard.   Harvard students can also take courses at MIT.  Here is a very short list of Harvard courses popular among students of Solid Mechanics:

  • Engineering Sciences 240.  Solid Mechanics
  • Engineering Sciences 241.  Advanced Elasticity
  • Engineering Sciences 242r.  Solid Mechanics:  Advanced Seminar
  • Engineering Sciences 246.  Plasticity
  • Engineering Sciences 247.  Fracture Mechanics
  • Engineering Sciences 216.  Biological Dynamics
  • Engineering Sciences 220.  Fluid Mechanics
  • Engineering Sciences 262.  Advanced Hydrology and Environmental Geomechanics
  • Earth and Planetary Sciences 263.  Earthquake Source Processes
  • Earth and Planetary Sciences 201.  Physics of the Earth's Interior
  • Earth and Planetary Sciences 204.  Global Sesmology
  • Applied Mathematic 201.  Physical Mathematics I
  • Applied Mathematics 202.  Physical Mathematics II
  • Applied Physics 282.  Solids:  Structures and Defects
  • Applied Physics 292.  Kinetics of Condensed Phase Processes
  • Applied Physics 293.  Deformation of Solids

A short list of other Harvard faculty members who have strong interests in Solid Mechanics or closely related fields.  Once you come to Harvard to study Solid Mechanics, you are likely to encounter the following professors:

Questions and answers.  I'll try to anwser your questions if you post them as comments below.  I'll also update this list as questions come to me through phone calls and emails.  You can also direct your questions to Julia Holbrook (holbrook@seas.harvard.edu), Director of Graduate Admissions, of SEAS.

Q:  Can I apply for enrollment in Spring?

A:  No.  We admit students once a year.  All students are enrolled in Fall.

Q:  If I can obtain external funding, will my chance for admission improve?

A:  Yes.  Admissions are principally based on two factors:  (1) An applicant is competitive in the pool of applicants, without the consideration of funding; (2) A professor is willing to support the applicant.  By obtaining external funding, you help to resolve (2).

Q:  I attach my resume.  Can you tell me if I am likely to be admitted?

A:  Usually No. An applicant is admitted on a competitive basis within a pool of applicants.  It is hard for me to give you a useful reply without going through the pool.

Q:  My scores for the English tests are below the levels set by your school.  What is the chance for me to be admitted?

A:  Very low.  An applicant is admitted by a committee of the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences.  It takes an extraordinary effort for a member of the faculty to persuade the committee to accept an applicant with very low scores.

Hi Zhigang

I am currently a PhD student in Caltech. I have strong interests in Applied Mechanics with special focus on solid mechanics and physics of earthquake rupture. I am expecting to graduate by 2009. Are there any opportunities for Post Doc. positions available at Harvard Solid Mechanics?

Best,

Ahmed

Zhigang Suo's picture

Ahmed:  As you probably know well, at Harvard Jim Rice is active in the field of earth science.  You may want to contact him directly.  If you are interested in other fields where solid mechanics plays roles, you may want to contact other faculty memebers as well.  Here are annoucements of two positions:

Dear Zhigang

Thanks for the valuable information you have provided here.

Best,

Ahmed

I am a masters student presently from Imperial College London. I am working on alternative modeling of fracture and more specifically the Rice-Tracey model. I am using this to model adhesive fracture on a DCB specimen using FEA. I have a very keen interest in pursuing a PhD in the field of fracture mechanics and specifically in modeling of fracture. I would be glad if you could enlighten me whether there are any openings in this field. If yes, then I would be honoured to apply for this rare opportunity.

Zhigang Suo's picture

Sorry to see this message so late.  Yes, fracture mechanics is a traditional strength here at Harvard.  Quite a few projects are concerned with fracture.  There will be some changes in coming years:

Zhigang Suo's picture

  • John Hutchinson will stay on the Faculty for two more years.
  • The search mentioned in the above post has resulted in a new addition to the faculty in solid mechanics:  Katia Bertoldi.  She will start her job at Harvard in January 2010.

Hi, I am a  masters student currently at Rutgers U. studying micromechanics and ferroelectrics under Dr. G.J. Weng.  I have a strong interest in solid mechanics and I am currently applying to Harvard for the Fall 2009.  I just want to say that am interested in your research along with the research of John Hutchinson but unfortunately for me he is retiring.

Would it be okay if I mentioned him as someone I would like to work with in my statement of purpose anyway?  Thanks.

Zhigang Suo's picture

John Hutchinson will teach for 2 additional years, and will possibly retire in the Fall of 2011.  Although he has not recruited student himself, he has been active in research, and in interacting with students.  Surely you can mention that you would like to work with him.

YAN Ting's picture

Dear Prof Suo,

thank you for your reply to my email. You said that applications are open in the end of each year, so now can't i apply? What a pity!

By the way, if i 've got PhD degree in china, should I take English test then to apply?

Zhigang Suo's picture

We have admitted people with PHD degrees before, I believe.  But I don't think we have many such cases.  I don't know if the university has a policy on this issue or not.

YAN Ting's picture

prof Suo, Thanks. So whom should I contact to know whether Harvard has the policy on this issue?

By the way, why can't I always log in?

Zhigang Suo's picture

Here is a paragraph from a website of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (GSAS), of Harvard University

Persons holding a PhD or its equivalent, or who have completed most of the work required to earn the PhD elsewhere, may apply to a PhD program in the Graduate School only if it is an unrelated field of study. In view of the large number of excellent applicants for the limited number of places in the Graduate School, preference for admission and financial aid will be given to those who have not already had an opportunity to receive a doctoral degree here or elsewhere.

I want to study on analytical modeling on concrete with friends who know ANSYS well

bmnikhil's picture

Dear Prof Suo ,

I am a masters student in Mechanical design. I am interested to go in the direction of planetary sceince ie., dynamics of asteroids and heavy planets. Impacts and formations.

Can you please tell me who is interested in this direction of research . I visisted your websites and found related study in fracture , but can that be applied or carried forward to planets... ???

Thanks

Nikhil

Zhigang Suo's picture

I'm unfamiliar with mechanics in planetary sciences.  You may wish to explore the website of the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences at Harvard.

Dear Prof. Suo

My name is Hee-yuen koh and I'm working in the national research center in South Korea after graduating the master degree in KAIST(Korean Advanced Institute of Science and Technology). These days, I'm looking for a Ph.D position to study about behavior of piezoelectric materials as a micro generator.  Besides, I'm developing a  programe for predicting its behavior like elastic wave propagation and generated electromagnetic field in it.

Because this calculation is deeply related to the stress and strain of the material, I am very interested in studying solid mechanics and getting the Ph.D position just like what you are offering. If it is related to your work, I'd like to send you an email with specific plans and ideas. What do you think?

Zhigang Suo's picture

You are most welcome to send emails to me.  The subject of electromechanical transducer is of general interest in my group for many years.

As indicated before, individual professors cannot admit students.  Students can only be admitted at the level of the School, on a competitive basis.  So if you are interested, you will need to apply for admission later this year.

Dear Prof. Suo

I'd just sent you an email.  And, of course I know that fact very well.
Thank you for your kind reply.

YAN Ting's picture

Prof. Suo

Thanks for your kind reply, I've realized that my situation is not suitable for that, but you are one of the most famous young professors in solid mechanics of the world, I love solid mechanics and one of my areas is the nonlinear behavior of cracked FGM structures, hope i could have chance to meet you, take your classes and work for you.

Dear Prof.Suo,

I have completed M.Tech. from R.E.College, Durgapur (now called NIT Durgapur), India. at present I am working in an Engineering Institute, India. I wish to persue PhD in the area of rotor dynamics. Can you please tell me who is interested in this direction of research? Thank you, .............   Chattoraj

Zhigang Suo's picture

Dear  Chattoraj:  I'm unfamiliar with the suibject of rotor dynamics, and sorry that I cannot help.  Best wishes.

Dear Prof  Suo:

I am pursuing my master degree of composite materials in imperial college london and graduated from Nanyang Technological University singapore. Are you having any composite materials-related projects recently so that i can pursue my Phd in composite areas?Thank you.

Zhigang Suo's picture

Dear Ervin:  Thank you very much for your interest.  I don't have a project on composite materials, although most of our projects involve integrating materials one way or another.  You can learn about our recent work on the web site of my group.

Muthukumar M's picture

Dear Prof Suo,

I am very much interest in experimental works on hydrogel material. may you suggest me something? to whom i have to send my resume?

Thanking you,

Regards,

Muthu Kumar M

 Dear Prof.Suo,

I am an under-graduate from IIT Guwahati , will be graduating by May 2010. I have keen interest towards facture and fatigue mechanics using FEA. I haven't yet started applying for MS. Can you please furnish me wih some details of fellowship for students pursuing only Master's Program and the positions at Havard.

- Karthik, IIT Guwahati.

Zhigang Suo's picture

No fellowship is available for Master students at Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences.  Every one of our PhD students receives a fellowship that fully covers tuition and living expenses.

To apply for our PhD program, you do not need to have a master degree.  Thus, if you are interested in obtaining a PhD degree in the end, please apply for the PhD program directly.

Muthukumar M's picture

Dear Prof Suo,

 I am very much interest
in experimental works on hydrogel material. May you suggest me
something?

Thanking you,

Regards,

Muthu Kumar M

Zhigang Suo's picture

Dear Muthu:  Thank you for your interest.  It is hard to make such suggestions in general.  You might want to take a look at our theoretical papers quickly.  In the introductions, many applications are mentioned.  These applications might give you some ideas of experimental work needed.

In general, experimental work is needed to develop basic testing methods, and to explore mechanisms of mechanical behavior of gels, including deformation, transport, and fracture.

baijatnal's picture

Dear Sir,

I have completed my Masters in Mechanical Machine Design from BIT Sindri in India. I have carried out research and development works on "effect of clearance fit on composite single lap joint pertaining to aircraft wing and fuselage strucure" using ABAQUS at National Aerospace Laboratories Bangalore India. Can you guide me how can i apply for PHD at your institution and whom to choose as my guide for completion of my PHD. I will be highly obliged to your concerned help. Muthukumar M's picture

Dear Prof.Suo,

First I am very thankful for your valuable reply. Actually in my master thesis I had worked on hydrogel material (above 90% water content). I had developed both uniaxial and equbiaxial experimental setup and charaterized the material. To prepare the polyacrylamide hydrogel we used ammonium persulphate solution(APS) as a initiator . Here I observed that if we increase the APS concentration the softness of the gel changes tremendously. I eagerly want to work in that area with your group. Also I have seen some papers in the area of swelling.

Thank you.

Muthu Kumar M

Dear professor Suo

I have worked on electromechganical behavior of dielectric elastomer composites and nanocomposites actuators. am top student with good GPA who wants continue her study as a PhD student in Harvard. I have news ideas in this progressive and innovative field. I wan your adviseif there is any chance for me.

Sincerely,

Nafiseh gharavi

Zhigang Suo's picture

Dear Nafiseh:  This year Harvard Solid Mechanics will recruite quite a few students.  Two new faculty members have just joined Harvard:  Katia Bertoldi and David Clarke.  They are experts in the mechanical behavior of materials, and will build up their groups.

Dear Professor Suo

Thanks for your attention and advise; I will follow it.

Bo Liu's picture

Dear Prof. Suo,

I thinl I can't be quilified to be your PhD. My research expereince and backgroud knowledge will help me work for you efficiently and creatively. I know well half of the courses you listed. I can start to work for you the time when I become a student of you. I have some backgound knowledge of your area. I dream of becoming rich and famous and I will certainly contribute to your fame and fortune. Thank you.

Dear Pfofessor Suo,

I am an applicant from China to your group. I now have a question on the admission decision. Could you tell me when the final result will be available to us and how this news will be sent to us. The website says that the decision will not be sent by email or phone, but the ordinary mail takes too much time. Could you consider inform us by email or the messages in application system. I think this will be better. Thank you very much. Hope to join in your group this year.

Zhigang Suo's picture

I agree with you that the decision, whatever it may be, should be sent to the applicants by email.  I will forward your suggestion to our admissions office.

Could you tell me whether the decision of this year has been available to us. Thanks

Zhigang Suo's picture

I am not on admissions committee this year, and do not have the information.  Please write to our Director of Graduate Admissions:

Ms. Julie Holbrook, holbrook@seas.harvard.edu

Dear Prof. Suo,

I am ashok, completed my Post Graduation studies in India from IIT Roorkee in 2008. Now i have been working as software engineerr with one mech software company. I am very much interested in doing research work related to FEA and Solid Mechanics. Are there any Research Positions available at Harvard?Could you please sugget me the procedure i can do. I would be very thankful to you, if you could provide the details regarding my queries.

 Thank you prof.

ashok.

Zhigang Suo's picture

Dear Ashok:  Every year we in Solid Mechanics at Harvard admit several PhD students.  Students submit applications online at the end of each year, and enroll in the Fall of the following year.

We now have several professors in Solid Mechanics, and admit students interested in theory, computation, or experiment.  You can find details of ongoing research by looking at the websites of individual professors in Solid Mechanics

Dear Prof. Suo,

Thank you for your fast response. I have gone through the list of Profs. you mentioned. What is the procedure for recuriting a candidate for Ph.D at harvard. How can people  generally get into harvard for Ph.D. What is the selection criterion? are there any vacancy positions for research now? Please clarify my queries.

Thank you Prof.

ashok.

Dear Prof. Suo,

I am currently an MPhil student in Institute of Textiles and Clothing, The Hong Kong Polytechnic Uiversity. The topic of my research is about the flexible and stretchable electronics. I have read all the related papers from you.

Though I am majored in textile field, we have learned a lot of basic knowleges to support our research including physics, solid mechanics, and chemistry. And before the Mphil study, I am a research assistant in the group of "fabric sensors for three-dimensional pressure mapping surfaces", where solid mechanics also played a great role.

Therefore, I have made a strong interest in solid mechanics. I sincerely hope that I can continue my Ph.D study in solid mechanics at Harvard. May I have an opportunity to join in your research group?

Best Regards,

LI Qiao

Zhigang Suo's picture

Thank you very much for your interest.  I am not on admissions committee this year, and do not have complete information.  Students are admitted by the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, and not by individual members of the faculty.

Please write to our Director of Graduate Admissions: Ms. Julie Holbrook, holbrook@seas.harvard.edu

Many thanks for your kind suggestion. I will send email to the director.

Best Regards,

 LI Qiao

Dear prof suo

I am a Post gradute (Mtech) student Indian Institute of Technology Madras. I am Pursuing my masters in clinical engineering . I did my bachelor's degree in mechanical Engineering. I am doing a project in modelling DEA actuators for developing a Medical device. Clinical Engineering does not involve any solid mechanicsI am learning it through my project which is of 8 months duration. Do I have a chance to pursue research in solid MEchanics and modelling in harward if i can clear GRE ??

midhun

Zhigang Suo's picture

Dear Midhun:  Thank you for your interest.  It is great that you are trying to model dielectric elastomer actuators for medical applications.  I have recently given lectures on dielectric elastomers at a summer school.  Partcipants at the summer school seemed to like the subject.  Here are the slides for the lectures, along with written notes used for a course at Harvard.

Back to your question.  It is really hard to answer such a question.  The admission is done at the level of the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences.  A candidate needs to be competative among the pool of the other candidates.  Of course, a candidate with interest that matches that of a member of faculty helps.

To sum up, it is hard to answer your question without placing your application among the pool of applicants.

mehrdad's picture

Hi,

For my Msc thesis, I have worked on prediction of mechanical behavior of carbon nanotubes with structural defects. I have developed a new theoretical method accompanying with molecular dynamics simulation.I have read almost all the questions and your responses. Based on what you said, nobody knows who will be admitted except the admission committee.

Firstly, would please guide me to know the average admission standards? Or if there is any standards or its only the personal view of the committee mambers?

Secondly, what should I do after admission? I have been admitted in some universities, but suddenly the faculties change their mind. I have paid a lot of money without any success.

Best

Mehrdad

Zhigang Suo's picture

Dear Mehrdad:  I am really sorry that you had to spend a lot of money without any success.  Here are some thoughts about your questions.

Average admission standards. The processes of graduate admissions differ from place to place.  It is hard to make useful statements about average admission standards.  But significant factors are quite common:  the match of interest between the applicants and professors, prior training, grades, GRE scores, journal publications, etc.

After admission.  You should carefully read the letter of admission.  If you have any question about the letter, always ask.  If a formal letter of admission comes from a university or a department, the decision is usally unlikely to be changed.

Dear Sir,

i am a simualtion student studying in Sweden, my filed is stamping, advanced high-strength steels behavior under deformation and robust design for metal sheet forming. i want to learn more theory knowledge about elastic/plastic and experiment design.  could you tell me which professor is interesting in these fields?

with regards

Liang

Zhigang Suo's picture

We do not have any professors at Harvard working directly on high-strength steels or sheet metal forming.  However, the following professors are in the general areas of the mechanical behavior of materials:

sameeul's picture

Hi Dr. Suo,

I am a masters student at University of Cincinnati. I am working with Dr. Yijun Liu to model tree leaf and understand their mechanics. I have a keen interest in modeling and simulation of solids and structures. I am planning to apply at Harvard for Fall 2012 for PhD. Do you think it is too early to contact the professors (who's research interest match mine) to discuss the opportunities of PhD studentship?

Thanks,

Sameeul Samee

Zhigang Suo's picture

It is not too early to contact professors now.  Since each professor may recieve a large number of emails from prospective students, such emails will get lost.  You may consider contacting the professor again once you have applied.

Dear sir

I am doing phd  from IITK (India). My branch is Mechanical Engineering (Solid Mechanics) and I am working  on Contact Mechanics  and  my work is related to adhesive elastic thin film.I am using FEM software (abaqus ) and matlab for computational work and wants to do post doc related to my field (experimental )  .Can you suggest me  how to apply for Post doc and Professor related to my work.

Zhigang Suo's picture

You may try to contact professors whom you wish to work with. Some advertisements are available, for example, at the Job Channel of iMechanica. You should also ask your professors for recommendation. It takes some work to find a good match.

Dear Dr. Suo,

I am  a senior student, and I have worked on CNT Composites and I have a good background in continuum mechanics and mathematics and also because I have worked on polymers and shape memory alloys I have a good knowledge about viscoelasticity.

Is there any Ph.D. position available regarding my interests?

Thank you in advance

Zhigang Suo's picture

You might wish to look at the interests of individual faculty members online.  Your expereince in continuum mechanics and mathematics should be valuable.

Thank you Dr. Suo for your reply

Harsha Tirumala's picture

I am Sri Harsha T R, currently in my final year of study of the Bachelors of Technology in Mechanical Engineering with Industrial & Production Engineering as Major. My college is Koneru Lakshmaiah College of Engineering (www.klce.ac.in) in India. I will be completing my degree in May 2012.

I have done many govt funded research projects in vast areas such as Biofuels form vegetable oils, algae. crash analysis in LS DYNA, CFD analysis in FLUENT, LMS Virtual.Lab, Projects in the field of Solid Mechanics, Finite Element methods, manufacturing, Production planning, inventory management, supply chain management, JIT production technique etc. I also have knowledge of different software’s such as Altair Hyperworks, Ansys, Pro-Engineer, Catia, LABVIEW. Also programming languages such as C,C++, Microsoft Visual Basic.

I want to apply for PhD. Can you suggest how well do I stand a chance ? Also can I apply to PhD programs directly after my bachelors degree without Masters ?

Zhigang Suo's picture

You have just listed very impressive acomplishments.  The admission at Harvard is done at the level of the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences.  It is difficult to judge the chance of an individual candidate without comparing to the pool of the candidates.

Yes, you can apply to the PhD program without a master degree.

Dear Professor Suo,

I am currently a graduate student majoring in
Aerospace Engineering at the University of Southern California. I am
considering applying to Harvard University’s Ph.D. program in Mechanical
Engineering (Fall 2012).

My research interests lie at the
intersections between fluid mechanics, robotics, and biological locomotion. There is a particular professor at Harvard
SEAS with whom I would like to ideally study as a Ph.D. student. However, I
recently found out that he is currently not accepting graduate students. In
this case, do you think it would be better for me to apply elsewhere? Any
suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Thank you very much for your time.

Sincerely,

Kyohei Onoue

If you are certain of your area of reserch, and no position in the area is available at Harvard, then you should look elsewhere.  If you think that you might also be intereted in other areas of reserch, then maybe you should take a look at activities in other groups at Harvard.  For example, have you looked at the Rob Wood Group and the Rob Howe group?

Dear Prof.Suo,

Can I apply for PhD Program at Harvard for the term Spring 2013 ?

Thank you,

Hello Sir,

The thread is much more than just useful which prompted me to write in to you.

I will be completing my master's this year and is enthusiastically in search of researchers who are working in theoretical aspect of solid mechanics. What I learn till now is that this field is gradually becoming saturated, though there might be areas that are yet untapped. Do correct me if I am wrong. Sir, my master's thesis focuses on studying the effect of nonlocal elasticity to predict the vibrational mechanics in single-walled carbon nanotubes (cylinder and sphere).

Please let me know of any oppurtunity for me to work on theoretical area at Harvard.

Zhigang Suo's picture

Hi:  I have not worked in the area you've mentioned.  But many areas of theoretical mechanics are interconnected.  Skills picked in doing one project will be useful in doing other projects.

Each year we have a large number of applicants, but we only have space to admit a small fraction of applicants.  The admission is done on a competitive basis.
