functionally graded material

Hi everybody;

In an ansys 3D-planner model, Is it possible to vary the material properties (E) as a function of coordinates, E=f(x,y,z)? one way is to vary material properties for every element But in this condition material properties in boundry of elements is discontinuous. Is it possible to vary material properties as a function tool in ansys then map it on table similar loads and boundry condition?

please help me.

Regards.

Mina

Dear Mina,

There are many ways to implement functionally graded elements in commercial FE packages. One way is to make use of the temperature if you are dealing with a purely mechanical problem. You can also easily do it by means of a user subroutine. All the options are thoroughly discussed in the following paper:

(You can find a pre-print version and the associated code at www.empaneda.com)

I hope that this is useful.

Emilio

your guidence is very useful, thanks alot.

Mina

I studied your paper. If temperature doesn't exist in my problem,  should I use from user subroutine in ABAQUS? can I vary material properties in integral point by APDL ansys without temperature? I  am not  familiar to ABAQUS.

please help me.

Best regards.

Dear Mina,

You can proceed in an analog manner in ANSYS. Define a variation of Young's modulus with the temperature and make sure that the coefficient of thermal expansion is equal to zero. Then introduce a temperature field that matches the variation of Young's modulus desired.

Emilio

thanks alot Emilio, I got it. thanks again.

Best Regards,

Mina.
