The Manager is responsible for the overall operations of the Central Workshops, comprising:
• Machine shop, with numerically controlled and manual machines.
• Glassblowing Shop
• Woodworking Shop
• Welding Shop
• CAD Office
• Electronics Lab
• Metrology Lab

The Central Workshops are essential service facilities, and must be managed as such. The Workshops have high-end and basic facilities, with capable technical staff. All members of the research community at KAUST have access to the Workshops for design and fabrication of components and systems to support their research activities.

Key responsibilities include:
• Provide management and supervision of technical staff who provide services to the research community at and beyond KAUST.
• Ensure that equipment and facilities in the Workshops are well maintained, available and operational to the highest degree possible.
• Ensure safe operation of all equipment at all times.
• Arrange for users to be trained on machines, as needed for their research.
• Sustain a user-friendly accommodating attitude to pro-actively seek the best means to meet the needs of researchers.
• Conduct effective performance management of KAUST-employed staff, including objective setting (at beginning of year) and performance evaluation (at end of year).
• Ensure that staff engages in appropriate training and professional development.
• Work with a User Committee to ensure effective communications between Core Lab staff and user community.
• Provide financial oversight to include budget management, reviews, and reporting.
• Prepare monthly reports on Central Workshop operations.
• Develop policies and procedures specific to the Workshops.
• Ensure compliance with applicable regulations and international best practices.

To be successful within this role you must have:
• A Bachelors or higher degree in a relevant discipline.
• At least 10 years experience in an academic or industrial R&D environment, involving design and fabrication of mechanical and electronic equipment.
• At least 4 years of administrative / managerial experience.
• Experience in supervision and management of Workshop facilities.
• Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to build team spirit and motivate staff.
• Ability to sustain responsive services to the research community.
• Effective communications skills (in English).
• Innovative, problem solving, multi-tasking, with a can-do attitude.
