Cornell Tenure-Track Faculty Position in the area of Structural and/or Geomechanical Behavior

A tenure-track faculty position at the assistant professor level is available in the School of Civil & Environmental Engineering at Cornell University (Ithaca campus) in the area of structural and/or geomechanical behavior across materials and time and length scales. A successful applicant will have advanced expertise in solid-, structural-, or geo-mechanics, and is expected to address complex structural-mechanical / geo-mechanical problems that affect the economic vitality and security of major urban centers. The sustainability and resilience of modern infrastructure requires a fundamental understanding of the structural and geomechanical factors that control performance under the effects of climate change, hurricane winds and storm surge, human threats, and the aging and deterioration of critical facilities.

Applicants should have advanced analytical skills in areas such as computational multi-scale methods and uncertainty quantification, along with the capability to develop and lead a research program directed at the structural and geomechanical components of problems such as:

• structural and geotechnical behavior to support environmentally and economically sustainable infrastructure materials and systems alternatives;

• structural and geomechanical aspects of energy development, power/transportation systems, underground/aerial utility networks, and factors affecting systems failures;

• monitoring and real-time sensing for improved planning and management of structural and geotechnical performance.

The successful applicant must hold a Ph.D. and will be expected to contribute to the undergraduate, master of engineering, and MS/Ph.D. course curricula, while maintaining a rigorous program of leading-edge research. The ability to form linkages to the Cornell NYCTech Campus will be viewed favorably.

While applicants at the level of assistant professor are preferred, appointments at the level of associate professor or professor will be considered.
