Two PhD openings in Mechanical Engineering at Mississippi State University

There are two PhD openings in Dr. Lei Chen’s group to study computational mechanics and microstructure modelling starting from spring 2016 or fall 2016 in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and the Center for Advanced Vehicular Systems, at Mississippi State University. Visiting students or scholars are also welcome. The focus of our research is three-fold: 1) microstructure evolution and surface flow of additive manufacturing (3D printing) alloys; (2) multi-scale and multi-physics modelling including phase transformation, stress evolution, ionic transport and thermal conductivity in energy storage materials such as lithium-ion batteries and super-capacitors, as well as energy harvesting devices; (3) novel numerical methodologies and/or techniques such as the advanced finite-element method and phase-field method for different engineering problems related to vehicles, e.g., fracture and fatigue, fluid-structure interaction and geometrically nonlinear phase transformation.

A PhD candidate should have a BS or MS degree in Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Mechanics, Aerospace Engineering, Material Engineering or any relevant fields, with outstanding academic records. We particularly prefer the candidates with strong background in mechanics and programming (using C++, C or Fortran). Full financial support will be provided with competitive stipends and benefits. We strive to provide a stimulating, interdisciplinary environment with exciting research topics and excellent colleagues where the candidates can be trained to become outstanding independent researchers, with sufficient freedom to explore their own ideas while working on well-designed projects.

Candidates interested in the positions are encouraged to contact Dr. Lei Chen at chen@me.msstate.edu, with the current CV and the contact information of at least two references. The positions remain open until filled. More information about our research can be found at https://sites.google.com/site/leichensresearch/.

The Mechanical Engineering department has strong ties with the High Performance Computing Collaboratory (http://www.hpc.msstate.edu/), Center for Advanced Vehicular Systems (http://www.cavs.msstate.edu/) and the Energy Institute (http://www.ei.msstate.edu/). The Department of Mechanical Engineering is one of eight academic departments in the Bagley College of Engineering. The Department offers an ABET-accredited undergraduate program in mechanical engineering, as well as graduate studies leading to MS and PhD degrees. The Department has approximately 770 undergraduates, 90 graduate students, 17 tenure-track faculty members, and two instructors. Annual research expenditures for the department are approximately 13 million dollars. Faculty members play a vital role in several college and university research centers ( http://www.me.msstate.edu/) and have developed strong research programs in the areas of computational engineering, energy systems design, materials science and engineering, and solid mechanics.
