Assistant Professor, Computational Solid Mechanics

The Sibley School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Cornell University, Ithaca, New York invites applications for a tenure track faculty position in computational solid mechanics.  Candidates must hold a doctorate in an appropriate field and are expected to establish an outstanding, funded research program as well as to contribute fully to both undergraduate and graduate instruction. Applicants at the level of Assistant Professor are preferred but appointments at other levels will also be considered. Salary and rank will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. 

We seek an outstanding individual engaged in computational research in solid mechanics or mechanics of materials.  The ideal candidate will be an innovator in the development and application of numerical methods for predicting the mechanical response of any class of solid materials or structures and in the use of high performance computing.  These methods could include representations of materials or structures over a range of size scales and the use of continuum, atomistic, multi-scale and multi-physics approaches.  Example areas of interest include modeling and design of structural and material systems, material processing, and modeling and representation of material evolution under large deformation. Specific opportunities exist for collaboration with theorists and experimentalists, including the incorporation of microstructural and micromechanical data into simulations.  Qualified candidates in other related areas are encouraged to apply. 

Cornell University fosters interdisciplinary research and an atmosphere of cooperation through its Centers and Field system.  Both in research and teaching, faculty in solid mechanics have outstanding opportunities to interact with faculty in solid mechanics, structures, materials and computational science from other departments (e.g., Civil & Environmental Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, Chemistry) and with a number of unique programs including the Cornell Center for Applied Mathematics, the Cornell Center for Materials Research, the Cornell Nanoscale Science & Technology Facility, the Cornell High Energy Synchrotron Source and the Cornell University Center for Advanced Computing.
