Full time Faculty Position at Université catholique de Louvain (Geotechnical Engineering)

 

The Université catholique de Louvain invites applications for a full-time professor position in Geotechnical Engineering

We seek talented individuals who will develop and drive a research program at the forefront of the field of geotechnics and/or soil mechanics, involving, for instance:

  • Soil-structure interaction
  • Soil dynamics, earthquake engineering,
  • Mechanics of granular and saturated media,
  • Marine and offshore geotechnics,
  • Geomechanical instrumentation and experimental methods in geotechnics,
  • Numerical simulation methods in geotechnics.

 He (she) will carry out researches in one or more of these fields. The capability and interest to develop experimental work, in laboratory or in situ, will be appreciated.The successful candidate will have teaching assignments in the above-mentioned fields within the various degree programmes organised by the Louvain School of Engineering (Bachelor and Master degrees in Engineering). In particular, he (she) will have a significant implication in teaching in civil engineering and construction.

Within the Sector of Sciences and Technologies (SST) of UCL, the position will be within the Institute of Mechanics, Materials and Civil Engineering (iMMC) and the Louvain School of Engineering (Ecole polytechnique de Louvain, EPL).

 UCL is a full university offering, in the context of the present position, the opportunity of cross-disciplinary research collaborations between engineers with the institute iMMC and with bio-engineers working in the Institute of Earth and Life Sciences (ELI). The Louvain school of engineering (EPL) is committed to excellence and innovation in education, witnessing constant growth of enrolments in the engineering and doctoral degrees since 10 years. The Institute of Mechanics, Materials and Civil Engineering (iMMC) is an ambitious, dynamic, highly collaborative, and inter-disciplinary research environment involving 27 faculty members and outstanding facilities. The EPL school and the iMMC institute are located in the Louvain-la-Neuve city campus. Tasks: the applicant will

  • be responsible for teaching courses at all the study levels (i.e. undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate), as well as in programmes of continuing education;
  • supervise the final diploma work (i.e. master thesis) of undergraduate students,  as well as PhD theses;
  • be involved in (and/or supervise, promote) research programmes;
  • contribute to the international visibility of the University through teaching and research excellence ;
  • contribute to activities of the University with a societal impact in the fields of the economy, socio-cultural changes or cooperation with developing countries.

Qualifications: the applicant must have

  • a PhD degree in Engineering, or any related discipline;
  • a significant scientific record with international publications;
  • either studied abroad for an extensive period or have had substantial experience outside UCL;
  • experience in and the aptitude for teaching at university level;
  • the capacity to work within a team of teachers and to integrate research findings into teaching;
  • creativity and must be open to teaching innovation and interdisciplinarity;
  • the capacities required to undertake academic research at a high level and to advise, or lead, a research team;
  • good knowledge of both spoken and written French and English. If this is not the case, the applicant will accept to learn French and/or English in order to be able to teach in French and English within 2 years. Fluency in other languages is an additional advantage.
