Research Studentship in Impact Engineering

Development of Experimental and Modelling Methodologies for Force Fusing in Structural Dynamics4-year funded D.Phil studentship, available from January 2017 (subject to eligibility requirements)

Further information: http://www.eng.ox.ac.uk/study-here/postgraduate/studentships/research-st...

Research Area

A 42 months postgraduate studentship funded by EPSRC and Rolls-Royce is available in the Impact Engineering Laboratory, Department of Engineering Science for development of experimental and modelling methodologies for force fusing in structural dynamics as a part of a long term collaboration with designers of large gas turbine engines for civil aviation. The aim is to develop novel, experimentally validated modelling approaches for simulation of deformation and fracture of materials and systems subjected to highly dynamic loading.  The student will play the central role in the development of numerical algorithms and encompassing software as a “plug-in” into a larger software suite, as well as related experimental methods for calibration and validation of developed software. The research will focus on discretisation methodology and related kinematics whilst remaining generic in terms of constitutive behaviour of solid materials for which the software is designed.  In addition, the developed methodology will aim to span a range of length scales. The aim is to validate the newly developed modelling capability against readily available experiments generated in the Impact Engineering Laboratory, Oxford where the project is hosted.  The research student will work under the supervision of Professor N. Petrinic.

Award Value

The EPSRC and Rolls-Royce funded studentship covers University and College fees plus provides a stipend (tax-free maintenance grant) of at least £14,296 p.a. for the first year, and at least this amount for a further two and a half years.  An additional contribution from industrial sponsor will be provided to an exceptional candidate.

Eligibility

The EPSRC and Rolls-Royce funded studentship is available to UK residents.
