PhD position in multiscale simulation of bio-inspired materials at Howard University, Washington, DC

The Sustainable Infrastructure, Geotechnics, and Materials (SIGMa) Lab at Howard University, Washington, DC invites applicants for a PhD position in advanced materials in civil engineering for Fall 2017. Highly-motivated, industrious individuals with strong computational and/or experimental skills, journal/conference publications, adequate English proficiency, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a collaborative team are strongly encouraged to apply.

Required qualifications 

Applicants must have a degree in mechanical engineering, materials engineering, civil engineering, bioengineering, or a related field. Ideal candidates should have a strong background in one or more of the following areas: multiscale modeling and simulation of materials, nanoscopic and microscopic characterization of composites, design of bio-inspired materials, programming, and data mining. Hands-on experience in additive manufacturing (3D printing) would be a plus.

Assistantships provide a monthly stipend, tuition waiver, and health insurance. About the SIGMa Lab

The interdisciplinary research at SIGMa is focused on fostering sustainability and resilience in civil infrastructure by developing high-performance and multifunctional construction materials, performance monitoring of structures using remote sensing and smart materials, addressing the geotechnical aspects of infrastructure, and incorporating uncertainty analysis and optimization into the analysis and design of interacting geotechnical and structural systems.
