Dear Colleague:

We are delighted to announce that a Focus Issue entitled "Intrinsic and extrinsic size effects in materials" for the Journal of Materials Research (JMR) is now open for submission:

https://www.cambridge.org/core/journals/journal-of-materials-research/in...

JMR, a Materials Research Society publication, is an archival materials science journal devoted to publishing new research that demonstrates a significant impact or advance of scientific understanding of interest to the materials research community. Papers published in JMR may be nominated for the JMR Paper of the Year Award. Please read all instructions on this page before submitting a manuscript to JMR:

https://www.cambridge.org/core/journals/journal-of-materials-research/in...

This Focus Issue will cover advances in understanding intrinsic and extrinsic size effects by theory, experiments, simulation, and modeling. Material systems will span from metallic, porous, granular, polymeric, and amorphous materials. Relevant size scales will range from microns to the nanoscale. The properties under investigation will be diverse as well, covering mechanical, electrical, magnetic, optical, acoustic, to thermal properties. Topics including interactions between intrinsic and extrinsic size effects or size dependencies arising from multiphysical phenomena are also of interest.

Specifically, review and original manuscripts will be solicited in the following areas:

  • Discoveries of new size effects
  • New theories and models to rationalize, explain, and predict size effects
  • Novel experimental and modeling techniques that enable exploration across length scales
  • Applications of size effects to designing materials with unprecedented properties

The deadline for all manuscript submissions is December 1, 2018. Accepted papers will be published in July 2019. More information can be found in the attached flier.

If you have questions about the manuscript format and/or online submission system, please contact Susan Dittrich (dittrich@mrs.org), who is a Journals Editorial Assistant for MRS; for questions about this Focus Issue itself, please feel free to contact me at shuozhixu@ucsb.edu.

Best
