Symposium: Mechanics of micro/nano structures on soft substrates: applications for flexible and stretchable electronics

Enormous interests are gathering in recent years towards the nascent technology area of flexible and stretchable electronics. The vast applications, e.g., rollable large-area displays, eye-like digital cameras, and sensitive textiles, will impact everyone's daily life. Future success of this promising technology largely relies on the reduced cost and enhanced portability of the flexible and stretchable electronic devices, attributes that will come from new choice of materials and of manufacturing processes. For example, electronic materials (metals, dielectrics and semiconductors) can be patterned into micro/nano structures on soft substrates, through a roll-to-roll fabrication, resulting in lightweight, rugged, flexible and stretchable devices. These devices will have diverse architectures, hybrid materials, and small features. Moreover, such devices will be subject to large, repeated deformation during manufacturing and service. The mechanical behaviors of such micro/nano structures of stiff materials on soft substrates pose significant challenges to the functionality and reliability of flexible and stretchable electronic devices. To address these increasing concerns, this symposium aims to bring together an international and interdisciplinary forum on emerging topics in the mechanics of micro/nano structures on soft substrates applied for flexible and stretchable electronics. Presentation topics include state-of-the-art modeling, computational and experimental techniques with emphasis on elasticity, viscosity, plasticity, strength, ductility, fracture, fatigue, surfaces, interface, contact, adhesion, and patterning.
