ES 240 Solid Mechanics Project

Zhigang Suo's picture

Updated on 11 October 2008.  Each student creates a distinct project that (a) addresses a phenomenon, and (b) involves a serious use of ABAQUS.   To get some inspiration, see projects of students who took this course in the past.

The project contributes 25% to the grade, distributed as follows.

  • 5%: November 11 Tuesday. Post your proposal for a project as a new blog entry in iMechanica.
  1. Title. ES 240 project: The title of your project.
  2. Tags. Use the following 4 tags:  ES 240, solid mechanics, Fall 2008, project
  3. Body. (i) Describe the project. (ii) Explain how FEM contributes to the project. (iii) Cite at least 1 journal article.
  • 2%: November 18 Tuesday. Post a comment to critique the proposal of at least 1 classmate. Try to make constructive suggestions. Cite at least 1 additional journal article.  See this entry if your web browser does not let you post a comment in iMechanica.
  • 8%: December 9 Tuesday (4:00 pm - 7:00 pm). 15 minute presentation. Use power point slides.  Pizza and drink will be provided.
  • 10%: December 16 Tuesday Upload (a) power point file of your presentation, and (b) word file of your final project report. Please upload to the same blog entry as your proposal.

Nice experiment in teaching mechanics. What’s the rule used to grade? What is the average grading for the students involved in the project?

The experiment worked well.  Students took the assignments seriously, possibly because they knew the records would be published for all to see and forever.  They did fantastic jobs, as you can see from their posted records.  Each student decided what she or he wanted to do.  I particularly enjoyed their 15 minute presentations.

This was a graduate class.  Grading was less of an issue.    We only had 9 students.  They took the class for their own reasons.  All final grades were between A and B.

I may use this teaching method later.

I guess many instructors will post their teachings, and encourage students put their works and discussions, on iMechanica in the future.

One class involves not just the instructor, teaching assistant and students, but mechanicians from every corner of the world.

I do not use word or powerpoint; Can I post my report and presentation in PDF format?

Yes! You can use PDF version.

I am an experienced Comsol user, and would like to use this software instead for my project.  The quality of the output and its ability to solve the equations are both adequate for my project.  Do you approve of this change as well?

Yuhang Hu's picture

Yes!

You are welcome to use Comsol for your project.

So we all can learn something new from you.

By the way, could you explain what the distinct advantage of Comsol is compared with other sofware? Thank you!

Yuhang -

Yes, I will explain the differences, and will include this in my project report.
