JOURNAL CLUB DEC 1 08: CYBER-ENABLED PREDICTIVE SCIENCE-BASED CONTINUUM MECHANICS FOR MULTISCALE FRACTURE PROCESS DISCOVERY
Submitted by Wing Kam Liu on Thu, 2008-11-13 22:40.The key to developing materials against failure under extreme environments is the understanding of the interplay between the various physical scales present, from the atomic level interactions, to the microstructural composition and the macroscale behavior. The ability to do this requires new methods that can be used to predict macroscale properties accurately based on microstructures and nanostructures without resorting to empiricism.

Submitted by admin on Tue, 2008-12-02 05:10.
The Academy of Sciences of Turin has awarded James R. Rice, of Harvard University, the 2008 Panetti-Ferrari International Prize for Applied Mechanics. The Academy was established in 1758 by Joseph Louis Lagrange, the Italian-born mathematician and astronomer known for his achievements in mechanics, calculus, and number theory. The prize is supported by successive endowments from the late Professors Modesto Panetti and Carlo Ferrari, 20th century leaders in Italian mechanics and aeronautics. First awarded as the Panetti Prize to Geoffrey I. Taylor of Cambridge UK in 1958, an award is made every 2-3 years and currently includes a €15,000 premium.

Help in Modeling Redefine Material Properties in ABAQUS
Submitted by fo2shmc on Sat, 2008-11-29 19:03.Hi everyone,
I am using ABAQUS to simulate the soil earth pressure around a buried concrete pipe. Based on reading different threads posted. I knew that there are two ways to simulate the process of excavation and the pipe placement and backfilling.
The first method is to use the ELEMENT COPY command where you duplicate two sets of the elements where the first is assigned the original soil propeties and the copied sets will be assigned the backfilling material properties and the concrete pipe properties. After the MODEL CHANGE command will be used to deactivate and activate elements based on the construction sequence.... This method works for my problem.
A toast for John Hutchinson
Submitted by Matthew Begley on Sat, 2008-11-29 13:44.Presented at the reception in honor of Professor John W. Hutchinson. I should explain the context of my remarks. In 1995, Bob McMeeking, having exhausted himself in the endeavor of forming a useful intellect from so little to work with, appealed to a higher power and sent me to Cambridge. The week of my arrival, Prof. Hutchinson surveyed the challenge before him, and responded with the temperate and sage wisdom we have all come to admire: he packed his bags and moved to Denmark....For a whole year.... This action inspired many in mechanics. McMeeking left the country the same year (apparently to recuperate from our time together). Evans apparently entered into negotiations withe the rest of the Ivy League. And John Bassani, unwittingly left holding the bag while on sabbatical at Harvard, enforced a strict policy of my only talking to him on the way to weekly basketball games.

VUMAT and ALE in ABAQUS
Submitted by Xinke Xiao on Sat, 2008-11-29 01:59.Hi all,
Here I encoutered a error in ABAQUS when I include ALE with VUMAT. When ALE was not included with VUMAT, my job can work well while with the combination of VUMAT and ALE, the job cann't work any more due to a "Signal 8" error. And if I use a built-in material model and at the same time ALE, a job can work. Furthermore, element failure is considered in all of the cases.
Anyone can give some suggetion? Thanks in advance!

Thermonuclear energy by shock waves
Submitted by Leonid G. Phili... on Fri, 2008-11-28 12:25.The reasons of the failure of initiative the thermonuclear reaction by shock waves
1.The failure.
The first thermonuclear reaction had realized a half century ago - in the hidrogeneous bomb. It had initiated just by the explosive wave becous of explosion the "atomic fuse" from deviding material. For industrial using of this scheme the power of explosion must diminish in a million times; the "atomic fuse" was not suitable for it. It was needed to search the way to form a system of the shock waves securing on a smoll thermonuclear charge the temperatures the same in a bomb.

Micromechanical observation of the kinetics of biomolecular interactions in liquid
Submitted by Kilho Eom on Fri, 2008-11-28 09:04.We have recently suggested the potential of resonant microcantilever for quantitative study on the kinetics of biomolecular interactions such as protein-protein interaction and DNA hybridization. We have employed the Langmuir kinetic model for describing the molecular interactions on the surface, which leads to change of overall mass of cantilever responsible for resonant frequency shift. Such Langmuir kinetic model dictates the in situ resonant frequency shift due to biomolecular interaction in liquid. This indicates that resonant cantilever is able to provide the information of biochemical reaction. This work was published in Applied Physics Letters in Oct 31, 2008.

Deadline for abstracts is March 15, 2009.
The conference will provide a forum for presentation and discussion of innovative complex models and methods for computer based simulation of dynamical processes in mechanics. Applications from solid mechanics, fluid mechanics, biomechanics, thermomechanics, and material sciences are welcome. The Conference will mark also 10 years of activities of the Centre for Nonlinear Studies – CENS. During the last decade, the complexity of wave fields in solids and fluids has been one of the focal issues in CENS. One of the key speakers at the Conference will be Prof. Jüri Engelbrecht, the Head of CENS, who will celebrate in 2009 his 70th anniversary.

Two-year Postdoctoral Position in Stochastic Electromagnetics
Submitted by sondipon on Fri, 2008-11-28 00:33.In many aspects of computational simulation there is an element of uncertainty or randomness in problem parameters. This two-year postdoctoral position aims to consider uncertainties for electromagnetism problems. More specifically, a stochastic finite element type of approach would be developed in conjunction with computational electromagnetics. The methodology might involve formulation and solution of stochastic partial differential equations, random eigenvalue problems, random algebraic equation, and random matrices.

Ultrathin silicon solar microcells for semitransparent, mechanically flexible and microconcentrator module designs
Submitted by Jianliang Xiao on Tue, 2008-11-25 18:19.In this recent work, we showed a new design of mechanically flexible and optically semitransparent solar cells with high efficiency. The ultrathin geometry of the microcell together with the neutral plane design enabled the solar cells could be bent to a radius as small as 4.9 mm (the size of a pencil). The position of the silicon neutral plane was given analytically, which provides a criterion for the geometry optimization. The strain in the silicon was shown to be much smaller than the failure strain by both theoretical analysis and finite element simulations. User-definable transparency feature was also obtained by utilization of optical concentrator and sparse layout of microcells. The mechanical flexibility and optical transparency imply it's broad applications on clothes, buildings and cars. This work was featured on the cover of November, 2008 issue of Nature Materials.

Complementary Strain Energy - Non-linearity
Submitted by ramdas chennamsetti on Tue, 2008-11-25 02:53.Hi all!
I read that the "cmplementary starin energy of a structure is not equal to sum of the complementary strain energies of it's components, if there is non-linearity like geometric"
That means for e.g. if I consider a truss stucture subjected to loading so that it undergoes geometric non-linearity, then the sum of the complementary strain energies from members is not equal to complementary strain energy of the structure.
I request somebody to explain why is it so??
Thanks and regards,
- Ramdas
