ABAQUS damaged plasticity model

I am trying, quite unsuccessfully, to model a composite steel frame under dynamic loads.  The problem is nonconvergence brought upon by the concrete tensile strains (i think).  Apparently ABAQUS kills the analysis once cracks form in the concrete.  Has anyone had any success using the "Concrete damaged plasticity model" under cyclic loads and large strains.  I have found that researchers use many different concrete properties to get convergence, but I am more interested in a better concrete representation.

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

I  have tried the Concrete Damaged Plasticity Model in Abaqus many times and I have found it to be a poor model is simulating concrete fracture especially under cylic dynamic loading conditions. This is why, I have been working on the development of a more robust model for damage in concrete materials along the lines of the Concrete Damaged Plasticity Model in Abaqus.

You can check our model in

Cicekli, U., Voyiadjis, G.Z., Abu Al-Rub, R.K., “A plasticity and anisotropic damage model for plain concrete,” International Journal of Plasticity, Vol. 23, No. 10-11, pp. 1874-1900, 2007.

Dr Abu Al-Rub,
Is it possible to get a copy of your UMAT subroutine for implementation of the concrete model in ABAQUS?  It would be very helpful to my dynamic research.

Thank you,

-Gary

Sir,

I am modeling Rc pilecap in ABAQUS. Initially i used smeared crack model  but it did not give the post peak response. Hence i tried using Concrete Dmage oplasticity model.

I am not clear of how to get the ABAQUS input parameters in the damage model. Most of the papers i referred explains the constitutive model forming the basis of the material behavior, but the procedure of how to get the input parameters have not been explained. Can you please help me out in this regard.

Thanking You

Hi.

I saw your post in imechanica. I am modeling RC pile cap using ABAQUS software. Initially i used Smeared Crack Model but since i could not get the post peak behavior using this, i switched over to Concrete Damage Plasticity model. Most of the papers i referred seem to give the constitutive model which forms the basis of the stress strain behavior but have not explained the procedure of how to get the damage plasticity parameters to be given in Abaqus as an input. Have you been successful in using Damage plasticity model. If so how did u arrive at the input parameters. Please help me out in this regard. asap.

Thanking You

i am trying to modeling vibration of PIEZOELECTRIC COUPLED BY CIRCULAR PLATE IN ABAQUS .please help me

Hi Jitu,

I had the same problem. As you probably know, you have to use the following input commands:

*CONCRETE DAMAGED PLASTICITY
*CONCRETE TENSION STIFFENING, TYPE=GFI
*CONCRETE TENSION DAMAGE, TYPE=STRAIN, COMPRESSION RECOVERY=0.1
*CONCRETE COMPRESSION HARDENING
*CONCRETE COMPRESSION DAMAGE

Next I send you an example I succesfully tested uniaxially and biaxially in one element model:

*CONCRETE DAMAGED PLASTICITY
 1., , 1.16, 0.66666, 0.001
*CONCRETE TENSION STIFFENING, TYPE=GFI
 2., 0.0003
*CONCRETE TENSION DAMAGE, TYPE=STRAIN, COMPRESSION RECOVERY=0.1
 0.0000, 0.0
*CONCRETE COMPRESSION HARDENING
 30., 0.
 40., 0.001
 20., 0.003
 5., 0.004
 0.04, 0.0042
*CONCRETE COMPRESSION DAMAGE, TENSION RECOVERY=0.0
0.0000E+00, 0.000E+00

I left everything default, and suppossed no plasticity, just a elastic  and a cracking part. I do not understand very well the *CONCRETE DAMAGED PLASTICITY ccommand, I left everything default. The tension side is defined by defining the maximum stress and the fracture energy in the *CONCRETE TENSION STIFFENING (GFI) command. The side of compression is definned as a table in the *CONCRETE COMPRESSION HARDENING command. The DAMAGE commands define strains different to 0 when unloading to a stress of 0. Please let me have feedback from your side if you see any incorrection.

Regards,

Mikel

I’m trying to model a reinforced concrete beam using concrete
damage plasticity. I have conducted an experiment for both uniaxial tensile and
uniaixle compressive test.  I have used
ABAQUS concrete damage plasticity. I have derived both Tension stiffening and Compression
hardening parameter but I have a problem with concrete compression damage and
concrete tension damage. I don’t know how and what equations I should use and
how to derive the data.

I would really appreciate if anyone could help me.

hi mike

even i have problem using damage plasticity model. often i encounter with eorrors telling independent variable should be in ascending order. and i have tried with the data you have mentioned above, with that i have a error telling too many increments made in this step.

so can you please help me know what exactaly these errors are.

any material where i can understand this model better

thank you

Hello everyone,

I need to use abaqs for modeling reinforced concrete. I tryed to read the help documentation but i did not find it helpful.

please if any one has example for modeling reinforced concrete in abaqus or any other advise for me i really need help.

Thank you
