Modelling mortar interfaces with ABAQUS or ANSYS
Hi! I am Angelos from Greece, starting a PhD on historical masonry. Historical masonry involves many types of walls, including composite masonry walls. For this reason I need to model mortar or grouted interfaces between stone or brick blocks. The simulation of composite walls combines anisotropic smeared crack modelling for masonry parts and interface modelling compatible with cementitious materials for the transeverse joints. Until now I am trying to find out if programs like ABAQUS or ANSYS have the ability to model this kind of interfaces using the libraries available to the programs. I have the opinion that cohesive material models used both in ABAQUS 6.7 and ANSYS 11 cannot be used for cementitious materials that fail (according to the literature I know) following a Mohr-Coulomb type failure criterion followed by strain softening. Is this true? Does anybody have more experience on the subject? Is there any alternative other than cohesive zones? I would really appreciate your opinion.
Kind regards,
Angelos

Hello Angelos
As far as ABAQUS 6.7 is concerned....There is a particlular element avalilable in ABAQUS,known as cohesive element. The damage intiation is governed by nominal stress and strain ratios criteria, where as the damage evolution is governed by fracuture energy criteria for this tupe of element. So it will be difficult to define a mohr coulomb failure criteria for this type of element. You can look into section 27.5.6 of ABQUS documentation for further references.
I hope it helps

Thanks
Thank you very much Dhruba. This is also what I realised while reading section 26.5.6. Do you have any alternative idea how to model succesfully mortar interfaces in ABAQUS?
Thank you in advance.

Well I have not looked into this matter in detail right now.But there is another command *bond which might help to define the bond characteristics between brick and mortar.Though I am not sure of it.Kindly go through the documentation and let me know if you get any lead..
hi every body
i am a researcher from india recently started working on Seismic Retrofitting of Historical masonry -same as ANGELOS' AND IT WAS GOOD TO see somebody working in the same area so that i can take help atleast in modelling from him
