ANSYS CONTACT Pair Problem

I am doing analysis in ANSYS which requires the contact pair to be defined. I am unable to select an appropriate value of Pinball region, Penetration Tolerance and normal penalty stiffness. Does any body have an idea how to select the good values for better solution? If you have anykind of material related to contact pair kindly email me at hijazi.19@gmail.com

 Thanks

how to apply torque in ansys on a beam of rectangular cross section...i want to meaure the deflection when torque is applied...can anyone help me in this matter

I also want to include residual stress. I thought of doing so by incresing the temperature compared to room temperature but it didn't work....can any one tell me what are the methods to apply residual stress

Hi Amit,

Here are few points, which comes to my mind; you will have to develop them further into workable solutions for your problem:

  • If you are using standard solid elements (SOLID45), there is no rotational d.o.f., and hence torque can not be directly applied.  You will have to apply equivalent force system (a couple) to simulate the effect of a torque.  Saint Venant's principle can come to your rescue... Have you ever seen a case of pure torque, which is not the resultant effect of applied forces? Atleast, I have not!
  • How the residual stresses are appearing in your analysis? You will have to simulate the same to introduce residual stresses in the body.
  • On a general note, I believe that many of the B.C.'s and loadings to be applied in an analysis can be decided based on the conditions in the physical problem at hand.

Hope this helps. Regards,

Hi,

There is no general rule to decide about the values of parameters in a contact analysis.  Usually it will be a compromise between accuracy and computational resources. So, when using ANSYS, most of the default values are usually good (that is why they are kept as defaults).  However, there could be situations in which you want to change them, for example, cases where the accuracy should be extremely good or in contrary, when some quick results are needed for some preliminary design work.  If time permits, the best option is to go for a series of analyses, with complexities or modifcations made in a progressive manner (this is the advice given by all the experts in the field, and obviously I have copied the advice!)

Thank yout very much Jayadeep,

I have already solved the problem by applying torque as to equivalent two oppsing forces.I have used SOLID185 element bacause the results were matching to the results obtained using equation.

But i am facing the problem with applying residual stress to the element.I have tried applying change in tmperature but the results obtained with change in temperature don't deffer much with the results obtained without change in tempareture. And I am using the same elemnt.

I know about INISTATE command but I am not sure whether we can use it here.I am waiting for your reply.Thanks.
