Women in Computational Mechanics
Hi, I am Ms Zartasha Mustansar from the University of Manchester. I am currently working towards my PhD, funded by Microsoft and the Dorothy Hodgkins Postgraduate Award scheme. I am working in the Palaeontology Research Group, headed by Dr Phil Manning, who together with my supervisor Dr Lee Margetts, are leading the development of a new discipline "Computer Aided Palaeontology".
Dr Manning's research team is using physics based modelling and finite element analysis to develop scientifically accurate representations of Dinosaur motion, one of the aspects of dinosaur biology that can help scientists understand how dinosaurs really lived.
Being one of the few women using Computational Mechanics, I am interested in supporting strategies that can be developed to ensure the successful future of women, particularly for recruitment, retention and advancement.
If there are any women using iMechanica, perhaps we could discuss these issues online. We could also explore any promising new initiatives that are ongoing that can further increase women's participation in Computational Mechanics.
Best Regards
Zartasha

Microsoft and Palaeontology?
Microsoft and Palaeontology? What is the link between them? (scratching my head...)
Women in mechanics
Hi Zartasha,
We do some work in paleontology too, although more at the level of examining the material properties of paleaontological specimens and how we can learn about diagenesis from them. See:
Olesiak SE, Oyen ML, Sponheimer M, Eberle J, Ferguson VL,
Ultrastructural mechanical and material characterization of fossilized
bone, in Mechanics of Biological and Bio-Inspired Materials, edited by
C. Viney, K. Katti, C. Hellmich, U. Wegst (Mater. Res. Soc. Symp. Proc.
975E, Warrendale, PA, 2007), 0975-DD03-09.
Also, not specific to computational mechanics but to science and academia in general, I highly recommend the "Female Science Professor" blog and book .
I hope your post brings more of the women on iMechanica out of the woodwork!
< Hi. I am really happy

Hi.
I am really happy to see a response, I like the approach of your work. We also work on material properties of paleontological specimens. The purpose of women in Computing : where are we now ?? can help the female scientists to put forward globally important scientific issues in engineering and Computational Mechanics which can yield a positive outcome in the scientific world.
Hope this can also bring women in Science and technology more closer. Looking forward to discuss relevant research topic online. >
