Study and Simulation of Tarbela Reservoir with and Without Sedimentation

Tarbela dam is one of the largest
earth filled dam. Tarbela dam lake has height of 485 ft  above the river bed and a reservoir size of
100 sq mi, reservoir capacity. It in
one of the largest man made reservoir constructed in 1970. The importance of
the dam can be realized due to the fact that this dam is on river Indus which
is considered as the backbone of Pakistan in terms of water storage, irrigation
and power generation. Main purpose of the Tarbela dam was to govern the flows
of the Indus River for irrigation purposes. In addition it is one of the
biggest sources of electricity generation. Sediment level at Tarbela Lake is
increasing across the years and there is a need to device methods to stop this
process. It is a valued asset of Pakistan. There is a great need to analyze
different parameters of the hydrology of Tarbela Lake for its efficient and
prolong use. In the present study problems of Tarbela Lake are analyzed CFD
(Computational Fluid Dynamics) tools. Tarbela Lake is modeled and simulated for
discharge with Pressure and velocity profiles. These results will further help
in studying effects of sedimentation movement on the tunnels, and reduced
capacity of the reservoir.
