contact problem
Fri, 2010-02-05 01:58 - fluttermech
hi all,
my name is christian, i'm a master degree student in mechanical engineering. i've been doing a swaging process simulation using MSC.MARC, but i have a problem.when i ran the simulation, there were some node or element that penetrated into the other element and/or rigid body. i tried to change the value of contact tolerance and mesh, but i got the same result (pentrated still happened). what should i do to solve this problem?should i use mesh adaptivity? please help me ^^

Dear christian I suggest
Dear christian I suggest the following:
1. Solve your problem in two steps. STEP1 Define a small gap between the two bodies(for example 0.1mm). Apply a displacement to the upper body equall to the gap and solve. In that way the solver will justify the contact. STEP2 Apply the load you desire.
2. Prefer to apply Displacements instead of Loads in each step
3. Check carrefully if there is any initial penetration.
4. Use easy setting first then tighten (I am not familiar with MSC.MARC but in ANSYS there are control parameters relevant to contact stiffness and penetration tolerance. When I start a contact problem I use a small value for contact stiffness and large value for penetration tolerance).
5. I noticed that the upper body is rigid body, try to use a flexible body with huge elastic modulus. In that way perhaps it will be easier for the contact algorithm to identifythe contact, although there will be an increase in computation time.
yiannis, thank's for your
yiannis, thank's for your suggestion ^^
About your model
Hi Christian,
Did you debug your model? I'm trying to do the same and have the same trouble. If possible, could you please share your model (setup) with me? Thanks in advance.
Regards,
Mike
