Call for papers for the Millechili Journal -- weight reduction in vehicle design. In collaboration with Ferrari SpA
SEE THE ATTACHED FILE FOR DETAILS
UPDATED May, 2010
Dear friends,
we are pleased to announce the launch of a new on-line journal in collaboration with the MilleChili Lab between University of Modena and Ferrari SpA.
Aims and Scope of the journal. To develop and discuss ideas and method for weight reduction in mechanical components pertaining to the automotive realm, with particular reference to sport cars. To this aim, the journal will adopt a multidisciplinary approach, in particular with respect to the following themes:
Mechanical Structures, Dynamics, and NVH
Joints, Adhesives, Welding. Fatigue, Creep, Friction, Fretting, Contact problems
Metallic materials, Composite Materials, Material selection & Ashby plots
Computational Mechanics, Finite Elements, Boundary Elements, CAD & Meshing, Virtual Reality
Structural Multilevel & collaborative Optimization, surrogate/reduced modelling, Optimization driven design.
Multiphysics problems. Crash tests, impact engineering and simulation
Biomechanics connected to car industry. Human-Centric Vehicle Design, Digital human modelling and simulation
We are pleased to announce a very prestigious Editorial Board, below. We are aiming at issuing the number “zero” of the online journal by the end of this year. Number “zero” will probably contain a welcome presentation from a personality in the automotive field. An Editorial may also be included, but we do not want to appear to be too redundant or self-celebrative: remember we are performing weight reduction!
For the first set of papers for number “zero” of the journal, we invite papers in the above subjects. We need to respect the following time table to hope to be online this year.
1) June 30th. Deadline for first submission. Papers will be put in a queue --- papers in excess of the selected 8-10 papers will also enter this queue. Selection will be based on overall balance of number “zero” topics/people
2) September 30th. Deadline for final submission.
Length is not particularly relevant: abstract should be limited to 3000 characters. Thanks in advance for your support, and we look forward to hearing from you, and to releasing number “zero”.
Best regards,

Abstract
The problem of the airplane wing cutting
through the exterior columns of the World Trade Center is treated
analytically. The exterior columns are thin-walled box beam made of high
strength steel. The complex structure of the airplane is lumped into
another box, but it has been found that the equivalent thickness of the
box is an order of magnitude larger than the column thickness. The
problem can be then modeled as an impact of a rigid mass traveling with
the velocity of 240 m/s into a hollow box-like vertical member. The
deformation and failure process is very local and is broken into three
phases: shearing of the impacting flange; tearing of side webs; and
tensile fracture of the rear flange. Using the exact dynamic solution in
the membrane deformation mode, the critical impact velocity to fracture
the impacted flange was calculated to be 155 m/s for both flat and
round impacting mass. Therefore, the wing would easily cut through the
outer column. It was also found that the energy absorbed by plastic
deformation and fracture of the ill-fated column is only 6.7% of the
initial kinetic energy of the wing.

AbstractMany physical problems like short fiber
suspensions flows or viscoelastic flows are modeled by linear and
non-linear advection equations. Many of the experimental and industrial
flows show often steady recirculating areas which introduce some
additional difficulties in the numerical simulation. Actually, the
advection equation is supposed to have a steady solution in these steady
recirculating flows but neither boundary conditions nor initial
conditions are known in such flows. In this paper, we present accurate
techniques to solve non-linear advection equations defined in steady
recirculating flows. These techniques combine a standard treatment of
the non-linearity with a more original treatment of the associated
linear problems.

AbstractRecent advances by the authors in analytical
methods for the analysis of plane fretting fatigue (FF) contact problems are
described, and new consequences for FF damage are derived. Constant
normal load and oscillating tangential load (the celebrated
Cattaneo–Mindlin case) are considered with in-phase oscillating moderate
bulk stresses, for an arbitrary spline rotated geometry and, in
particular, the flat punch with rounded corners in view of application
to the dovetail joints.
Extremely simple, new results are found for
initiation parameters such as tangential microslip and frictional
energy, which have been used under certain conditions as threshold
parameters for FF.
Finally, it is shown that for an “almost flat”
geometry, the surface damage parameters decrease, but the tensile stress
concentration increases, although it becomes more localized, suggesting
that for cracks eventually initiated, the likelihood of self-arrest is
higher than in the equivalent Hertzian case with same loads. This seems
to interpret recent experiments, although it is not clear whether the
optimal geometry in terms of FF life is the perfectly flat one, or an
intermediate one.

AbstractThe contact of a flat punch over a half-plane
under constant normal loads, and oscillating tangential and bulk loads
is studied, with the aim to improve the crack analogue (CA) model for fretting fatigue
(FF) (Acta Mater. 46(9) (1998) 2955). New analytical results are found
for a range of conditions, finding the effect of bulk loads and of
partial slip which were not considered in the original CA model.
Implications for the FF life assessment methodology are found to be
significant.

AbstractIn this paper, the Cattaneo theory of frictional contact is
extended to elastic half-spaces in contact through rough disordered interfaces.
The discrete version of the Cattaneo theorem is provided, and
represents the basis of a multiscale numerical contact algorithm.
Mathematical surfaces with imposed roughness, as well as experimentally
digitised ones, are analysed. By means of a numerical method, the
evolution of the
contact domain, at different resolution, is investigated.
Roughness of the interfaces provides lacunarity of the contact
domains, whose fractal dimension is always smaller than 2.0. When a
tangential force is applied, the extent of the stick area decreases in
the same way as the contact area develops with increasing pressure, and the
slip area is found to be proportional to the tangential force, as
predicted by Cattaneo theory. The evolution of the shear centroid, as
well as the amount of dissipated energy up to full-sliding, are
provided. Finally, it is shown that, at a sufficient level of
discretization, the distribution of contact pressures is multifractal.

Luigi Nicolais, primo a sinistra, in compagnia di Giorgio Napolitano e Luigi
Biggeri, Presidente dell'ISTAT, 29
novembre 2006
Luigi Nicolais (Sant'Anastasia, 9
febbraio 1942)
è un politico
e docente
italiano.
è Presidente e Fondatore dell'IMAST (distretto
tecnologico sull'ingegneria dei materiali polimerici e strutture) mentre
tra il maggio
e l'agosto
conferita l’onorificenza dell'Ordine
al Merito della Repubblica Italiana. L'8 maggio
2008 passa
