Open PhD position: In Vivo characterization of biological tissues through Magnetic Resonance Imaging

The identification of the mechanical properties of biological and (in particular human) tissues in in vivo situation is a challenging task, since the measurement of the deformation in the volume of the body is still an open question. The goal of this thesis is to develop a mechanical test for the characterization of muscular tissues where the measurements are based on the coupling of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) techniques and image correlation approaches. The measurements should yield the displacement and strain fields within the bulk of the muscle, hence providing meaningfull information for the identification of the mechanical (heterogeneous) behaviour of the studied tissue. A dedicated numerical approach for the identification is to be developed as well.

The PhD written application is to be sent by April, the 30th, 2010. The PhD position starts in October 2010.
