PhD candidate position in structural dynamics

The Institute of Structural Analysis at Leibniz Universität Hannover invites applications for a

PhD candidate position

(Salary scale TV-L E13)

The position will be available from 1 November 2010 and should lead to a PhD thesis.

Research Project

The research will be carried out within the framework of a 3-year European Union funded project involving 13 European partners from both academia and industry. The current structural design philosophy for aircraft is based on the definition of quasi-static loads, which in general overestimate the actual loads under the dynamic loading acting on the aircraft. This will in general result in an undesired increase in structural weight. The overall objective of the EU project is to develop methods and procedures to determine dynamical loads during aircraft service, considering the effects of dynamic buckling, material damping, and mechanical hysteresis.

Your task at the ISD will be to investigate the local force redistribution due to instability and plasticity for aircraft under dynamic loading, using detailed 3D Finite Element models of aircraft components, and to develop fast tools in order to improve the computational efficiency of the complicated, time-consuming dynamic analysis.

Requirements

Applicants should have a diploma or masters degree in engineering or applied mathematics. A strong background in solid and structural mechanics is necessary. The Leibniz Universität Hannover aims, in particular, to promote women within the scope of the statutory provisions and, hence, emphatically invites qualified women to apply for this position. Severely disabled applicants will be given preferential consideration in the event of equal qualification. The University welcomes applications by researchers from abroad.
