This paper presents an effective numerical approach for welding process
parameter optimization to minimize weld-induced distortion in
structures. A numerical optimization framework based on coupled Genetic
Algorithm (GA) and Finite Element Analysis (FEA) is developed and
implemented for a low and a high fidelity model. Classical weakly
coupled thermo-mechanical analysis with thermo-elasto-plastic
assumptions is carried out for distortion prediction of numerical
models. The search for optimum process parameters is executed by direct
integration of numerical models and GA-based optimization technique. The

current paper focuses on investigating deformation mechanism of
graphene sheets in a graphene reinforced polyethylene (Gn–PE)
nanocomposite. Classical molecular dynamics (MD) simulation was
conducted on large Gn–PE systems. Different spatial arrangements of
graphene sheets were considered in order to study the effect of nonlocal
interaction among the graphenes. In all the cases 5% weight
concentration of graphene was considered in order to prepare atomistic
models for Gn–PE. As expected, graphene seemed to enhance the overall
Young’s modulus and tensile strength of the Gn–PE nanocomposite.

This project focuses on applications of metallic foams where structural functionality is combined with energy absorption, damping, heat insulation, and noise silencing.
The goal of this project is to develop a failure model of a metallic foam material and to implement it in a commercial FEA code (LS-DYNA). Next, computer simulations will be employed for virtual prototyping of multi-physical applications with the focus on composite columns and sandwich panels. Experiments will be also conducted to validate and calibrate the developed computational and analytical approaches.
Position is available for a postdoctoral fellow to carry out an industry sponsored project on carbon fiber composite modeling. The contract is initiated for one year, with possible extension if work progresses satisfactorily. The research will focus on
(1) micromechanics modeling of elastic and viscoplastic behavior of injection molded carbon fiber composites;
