3rd International Conference on Material Modelling incorporating the 13th European Mechanics of Materials Conference

Dear Colleagues,
During the last decades material modelling has become a field of central
scientific importance. Although there exist many workshops, meetings,
colloquia, etc. on specific materials, and particular applications, here a
single conference dedicated to material modelling with all its various
facets is intended. To this end, the aim of the ICMM conference is to bring
together researchers from the various fields of material modelling and
materials characterization. The intention here is to cover essentially all
aspects of material modelling. This will provide the opportunity for
interaction among and exchange between scientists working in different

Journal Club Theme of April 2013: Mechanical Metamaterials

Discussion on metamaterials (particularly dynamics of phononic/acoustic metamaterials) was first initiated in Journal Club Dec. 2007 (by Dr. Banerjee) and then recently again in Journal Clubs May 2012 (by Dr. Spadoni), June 2012 (by Dr. Kochmann) and Dec. 2012 (by Dr. Ruzzene).  For the last five years, the research area in mechanical metamaterials has broadened so much that it now covers various unconventional macroscopic characteristics, not only dynamic properties (e.g., band-gaps, dynamic modulus/density, etc.) but also static properties (e.g., negative modulus, ultra-low density, etc.).

For the recent development in this area, I would recommend a review paper by Lee et al. [1].  The paper summarizes several extraordinary mechanical characteristics and their fabrication techniques that have been recently reported.  Unconventional functionalities can be classified into linear properties (e.g., elastic modulus-density, phononic band-gaps, Poisson’s ratio) and non-linear properties (e.g., specific energy absorption, high-strain-rate resistance). In this Journal Club, I would like to introduce a couple of related (and interesting!) topics which are not intensively covered in the review paper [1].

Dislocation motion and instability

Yichao Zhu       Stephen J. Chapman       Amit Acharya

(to appear in Journal of the Mechanics and Physics of Solids)

The Peach-Koehler expression for the stress generated by a single (non-planar)
curvilinear dislocation is evaluated to calculate the dislocation self stress. This is
combined with a law of motion to give the self-induced motion of a general dislocation
curve. A stability analysis of a rectilinear, uniformly translating dislocation is then
performed. The dislocation is found to be susceptible to a helical instability, with
the maximum growth rate occurring when the dislocation is almost, but not exactly,
pure screw. The non-linear evolution of the instability is determined numerically, and
implications for slip band formation and non-Schmid behaviour in yielding discussed.
