Journal Club Theme of May 2012: Hierarchical and Quasiperiodic Phononic Crystals and Metamaterials

Following last month’s blog by Mahmoud on the role of structure in the design of materials capable of controlling the propagation of mechanical waves, I would like to delve into the characteristics of the structure itself. The propagation of mechanical waves can be controlled via scattering induced by a material’s structure.The propagation of waves for example is significantly disturbed when their wavelength and direction become correlated with the medium’s structure. This is known as Bragg scattering and can be achieved simply by embedding voids or inclusions (of different physical properties) in a material [1].


Post-Doc: Multiscale Simulations of Domain Structures in Thermoelectric Materials

The chair of Materials and Process Simulation at the University of Bayreuth is inviting applicants for a postdoc position available within the project “Multiscale Simulations of Domain Structures in Thermoelectric Materials” funded within the framework of the focus program SPP 1386 “Nanostructured Thermoelectrics” by the German Research Foundation (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft) for a period of three years. In our project, ab-initio density functional theory and classical Monte Carlo simulations are used to investigate and optimize the domain formation in half-Heusler thermoelectrics.

An Indo-Danish bilateral workshop on “Future Composite Technologies for Wind Turbine Blades” was jointly organized by the Department of Wind Energy, Technical University of Denmark and Applied Mechanics Department, Indian Institute of Technology, New Delhi, India. We think this is an exciting Workshop covering several research topics relates to wind turbine blades – design and manufacturing, new computational methods, processing and materials characterization techniques.

The Workshop will be held only two days i.e. 08th – 09th October 2012 at Indian Institute of Technology, New Delhi, India with a partial financial support provided by Danish Agency for Science Technology and Innovation, Copenhagen.

Complex interplay of nonlinear processes in dielectric elastomers.

A combination of experiment and theory shows that dielectric elastomers exhibit complex interplay of nonlinear processes. Membranes of a dielectric elastomer are prepared in various states of prestretches by using rigid clamps and mechanical forces. Upon actuation by voltage, some membranes form wrinkles followed by snap-through instability, others form wrinkles without the snap-through instability, and still others fail by local instability without formingwrinkles.Membranes surviving these nonlinear processes are found to attain a constant dielectric strength, independent of the state of prestretches. Giant voltage-induced stretch of 3.6 is attained.

Two funded PhD studentships in Impact Engineering at Oxford University

Objective Stress Rates in Finite Strain of Inelastic Solid and Their Energy Consistency

In many practical problems of solid mechanics, it is sufficient to characterize material deformation by the small (or linearized) strain tensor. But there are also many problems where the finiteness of strain must be taken into account. These are of two kinds: 1) Large nonlinear elastic deformations possessing a potential energy (exhibited, e.g., by rubber), in which the stress components are obtained as the partial derivatives of potential energy; and 2) inelastic deformations possessing no potential, in which the stress-strain relation is defined incrementally and the stress increment or rate must be formulated objectively (i.e., independently of coordinate rotations). The present paper reviews the latter kind.

Ph.D. Position at Polytechnique Montreal on Instability-Assisted Microfabrication of Tough Fibers

 A funded Ph.D. positionin Mechanical Engineering is available at Polytechnique in Montreal, Canada. The work combines experimentations and theoretical modelling. The goal of the project is to use a fluid instability to fabricate intricate patterns at the microscopic scale. By fabricating fibers this way, interesting mechanical properties can be obtained depending on the parameters of the instability.

Fracture Resistance of Silicon With Nano Scratch Testing

The scratch test, using nano loads, has become widely used for the study of adhesion strength and marring resistance of thin films and coatings. This same test can also be used to study fracture behavior on brittle substrates similar to a marring resistance test approach. This can provide an in-depth observation of failure on delicate substrate materials at precisely controlled and recorded loads.

Postdoctoral Position in Experimental Biomechanics

and the Glaucoma Center of Excellence invite applications for a postdoctoral
position in the area of experimental biomechanics to characterize the mechanical
behavior of eye tissues, particularly the sclera and optic nerve head, in mouse
