Crack growing and fracture criterion

Dear iMechanicians,

First I'd like to thank the ones sharing their lecture notes, it's
very helpful for someone who is learning fracture mechanics by himself like I
do.

Nevertheless, I would have some questions regarding the
energetic aspect of the crack propagation. Please do not hesitate to correct me
if I am wrong. Questions are related to this lecture note, from Professor Suo: node/7507

PhD scholarship in Diesel Engine Tribology

A PhD scholarship is available at DTU Mechanical Engineering, Section for Solid Mechanics, in the field of diesel engine tribology. The scholarship focuses on computational modelling and experimental verification of fluid film and bearing parts of journal bearings in large two-stroke diesel engines. The department has well-established research activities in these fields and the present scholarship is partly funded by the EU-project Hercules-C. The research activities will be performed in close cooperation with MAN Diesel & Turbo SE located in Copenhagen.

Vibrations, Shocks and Noise: 2012 Paris

The next conference Vibrations, Shocks and Noise will take place in Paris: July 3-5, 2012.

Covariantization of Nonlinear Elasticity

In this paper we make a connection between covariant elasticity based on covariance of energy balance and Lagrangian field theory of elasticity with two background metrics. We use Kuchar's idea of reparametrization of field theories and make elasticity generally covariant by introducing a "covariance field", which is a time-independent spatial diffeomorphism. We define a modified action for parameterized elasticity and show that the Doyle-Ericksen formula and spatial homogeneity of the Lagrangian density are among its Euler-Lagrange (EL) equations.

26th issue of the WW-EAP Newsletter is now available

The 26th issue of the WW-EAP Newsletter is now available at:

http://ndeaa.jpl.nasa.gov/nasa-nde/newsltr/WW-EAP_Newsletter13-2.pdf

This newsletter on the field of electroactive polymers, edited by Dr. Yoseph Bar-Cohen, addresses the need for rapid communication of progress in the field and state-of-the-art capabilities.

Tech Brief: Composite Winglet Optimization for Reliability and Robustness

A new tech brief was recently released on composite optimization. See below for additional information:

Composite materials offer the potential for structures of lighter weight than their metallic counterparts. The stiffness and strength of a laminated composite structure depends directly on the ply stacking sequence. A design process that includes the effects of manufacturing tolerances and variability in lamina properties will allow for a more reliable and robust structure.

On-line International Master’s of the Theoretical & Practical Application of Finite Element Method and CAE Simulation

We would like to present you the on-line International Master’s of the Theoretical & Practical Application of Finite Element Method and CAE Simulation.  This is a post-graduate training program in English language targeting the professional application of the Finite Element Method and advanced commercial CAE software. The program curriculum includes the necessary theoretical subjects, in addition to an extensive training of application and practices using MSC software Patran and Nastran, and CivilFEM with Marc.

Renewable Power And Sunlight Energy - Thin-Film Solar Panel Products

As technology constantly advances there are many new green technologies released each day that can help us improve our energy efficiency. One such technology is the "Thin-Film Solar Panel." How are thin-film solar panels being utilized by consumers today? How do they compare against traditional photovoltaic (PV) panels?
