Stick-Slip transition in dry friction - PhD thesis -part I

This is the "part I" of my PhD thesis.

It addresses the problem of the stick-slip transition at an interface experiencing dry friction taking inspiration from the experiments led by Prof. Fineberg, where for the first time, an high speed camera has been used to visualize how the contact interface evolves when stick-slip transition occurs.

Localization and instability in sheared granular materials: Role of friction and vibration

Shear banding and stick-slip instabilities have been long observed in sheared granular materials. Yet, their microscopic underpinnings, interdependencies and variability under different loading conditions have not been fully explored. Here, we use a non-equilibrium thermodynamics model, the Shear Transformation Zone theory, to investigate the dynamics of strain localization and its connection to stability of sliding in sheared, dry, granular materials. We consider frictional and frictionless grains as well as presence and absence of acoustic vibrations.

A cable bending stick-slip analytical model

Single strand cable bending, stick-slip, analytical models require that a choice be made between two contact modes between adjacent wires: either radial (between layers) or lateral (between same layer wires). In most recent models (e.g. Papailiou’s) radial contact is selected. A “lateral contact” model has been presented by Panetti in 1944 and can be found in the proceedings of the Turin Royal Academy of Science.
