Journal Club for May 2022: Machine Learning in Mechanics: curating datasets and defining challenge problems

Over the past several years, machine learning (ML) applied to problems in mechanics has massively grown in popularity. Here is a figure from a slide that I made in early 2020 referencing a few examples from the literature — already this slide feels out of date! All of these authors (and many many others) have published new papers on this topic.

Discovery and design of soft polymeric bio-inspired materials with multiscale simulations and artificial intelligence

https://doi.org/10.1039/D0TB00896F It is my privilege and honor to be highlighted as the Journal of Material Chemistry B's Emerging Investigators for 2020. Together with our group's young budding scientists, Chenxi Zhai, Tianjiao Li, and Haoyuan Shi, we review the discovery and design of next-generation bio-inspired materials by harnessing the virtual space in materials design: materials omics (materiomics), materials informatics, computational modelling and simulations, artificial intelligence (AI), and big data.

The Machine Learning as an Expert System

1.

To cut a somewhat long story short, I think that I can ``see'' that Machine Learning (including Deep Learning) can actually be regarded as a rules-based expert system, albeit of a special kind.

I am sure that people must have written articles expressing this view. However, simple googling didn’t get me to any useful material.

I would deeply appreciate it if someone could please point out references in this direction. Thanks in advance.
