'Sideways' and stable crack propagation in a silicone elastomer

We have discovered a peculiar form of fracture that occurs in a highly stretchable silicone elastomer (Smooth-On Ecoflex 00–30). Under certain conditions, cracks propagate in a direction perpendicular to the initial pre-cut and in the direction of the applied load. In other words, the crack deviates from the standard trajectory and instead propagates perpendicular to that trajectory. The crack arrests stably, and thus the material ahead of the crack front continues to sustain load, thereby enabling enormous stretchabilities. We call this phenomenon 'sideways' and stable cracking.

Crack Growth Resistance in Metallic Alloys: The Role of Isotropic Versus Kinematic Hardening

We have always modelled crack propagation under monotonic/static loading in metals assuming isotropic hardening. However, we show that anisotropic/kinematic hardening effects play a significant role due to non-proportional straining with crack advance; the isotropic hardening idealization leads to steady state fracture toughness predictions that could be 50% lower. I hope that some of you find this work interesting.

PhD position in computational mechanics

We in Aalto University School of Engineering are looking for a doctoral student to work on numerical modelling of fragmentation of quasi-brittle materials. In more detail, you will study breakage and fragmentation of ice blocks. These phenomena occur under compressive loads in ice block to ice block contacts. The fragmentation process is complicated, and requires novel numerical modelling techniques. Modelling may need to be done on different scales, which may have to reach from very high resolution modeling to simplified contact models on larger scale.

Fatigue Fracture of Self-Recovery Hydrogels

Dear Colleagues,

Here is our recent paper “Fatigue Fracture of Self-Recovery Hydrogels”. To the hydrogel community, this paper distinguishes the fatigue fracture and the self-recovery of a hydrogel. To the mechanics community, we show that, for the first time in hydrogels, the fatigue threshold depends only on the covalent network, but not on the noncovalent interactions that provide dissipation.
