Cant solve "too many attempts made for this increment"-issue on some models

Choose a channel featured in the header of iMechanica:

Hello at all,

I have some serious issues with some of my models in Abaqus 6.14. I need to simulate shear failure to investigate the influence of concrete strength and fracture energy on the size effect. So far, everything went good. I calculated almost 100 models without any problem with exactly the same model (only materials changed). But: For the combination of concrete strength fck=50MPa and a fracture energy of Gf=60N/m or Gf=80N/m, the calculations will stop after a short time although the .odb file shows only some minor bending cracks in the beam

How to model fastener with same force-displacement behavior for all translational directions in a plane in Abaqus?

Choose a channel featured in the header of iMechanica:

Hi everyone. I want to model the fasteners connecting a wood sheathing to a steel frame in Abaqus. I want to input the same force-displacement behavior for all translational directions in the plane of the sheathing (like a radial spring).

I was using spring element type Spring2 (nonlinear) but I could define behavior in only 2 translational directions in the sheathing plane (X and Z). This made my model overly stiff after the elastic range. I read about the RADIAL-THRUST connector element but it does not seem to be the one.

Shear lock free Timoshenko finite element for thin to thick beam

In this research work, simple, efficient, highly accurate and shear_lock free finite elements based on the Timoshenko beam theory have been developed (see details for numerical results).

Planar tension test = Pure shear test for rubber? Explanations

Hi,

I know what is this test and I know under certain conditions (low deformations and specimen's wide 10 times its lenght), a planar tension test is equal to pure shear test.

But I don't know why if we are doing a tension test we have pure shear.

Let me explain:

|           |    ---> 2-Axis

State of hydrostatic stress along shear zone.

Dear all,

I did a three point bending test on a brittle rod. I observed an oblique fracture (slant approx 45 degrees). It can be an easy conclusion that this 45 deg crack is due to shear failure. But i have the following questions

1. Can a shear band occur in bending mode? as in literature very frequently shear bands are reported in pure tension and compression.

Cohesive material zone model and ABAQUS subroutines

Hello,

I'd like to ask if anybody knows if it is possible to use an ABAQUS usersubroutine that could vary some parameters (τmax, kn or ks etc) of the cohesive zone model of ABAQUS with the vertical pressure applied on the interface. The new ability of ABAQUS to support cohesive behaviour in contact surfaces seems very interesting and useful, however how could somebody simulate the interface under a compression - shear regime that may follow a Mohr-Coulomb type behaviour?

Meshfree model of shear at two-layer material interface

Choose a channel featured in the header of iMechanica:

Hello IMechanicans,

I am interested in modelling shear response to mechanical stress at the interface of a two layer matrial e.g. the skin of the human hand, where the superficial layer of tissue slides over the deeper layer, while retaining some sort of attachment to it.

Does anyone know of any research papers that have investrigated this topic? I would rather base my work on the advances made my others, instead of reinventing the wheel.

Thanks,

- Olumide

Modeling RC Beam with Externally bonded frp

I want to model a simple RC beam with simple restraint (hinge)
