The post is funded by Rolls Royce for a fixed-term of 2 years in the first instance.

The project is a collaborative effort with researchers at Rolls-Royce plc in the context of developing a better understanding of titanium alloys subjected to rapidly applied loads The research aims at exploiting existing approaches and developing novel methodologies for experimental characterisation and numerical simulation of deformation and failure of rapidly loaded materials employed in the manufacturing of large civil aviation gas turbine engines. You will be responsible for the execution of experiments and the development of deterministic and probabilistic experimental and analytical simulation techniques aimed at predictive modelling of the response of materials to impact loading such as that imposed by bird strikes, the development of supporting experimental techniques, the writing of progress reports to sponsors and journal publications and the production of documented software and experimental procedures.

You should possess a doctorate (or be very near to completion) in engineering, materials science, mathematics, physics or a related discipline; or, alternatively, have a good first degree and significant relevant industrial experience. Proven skills in novel research together with experience designing experimental platforms and experimental methodologies for high-rate loading, with a view to acquiring specific material response data of interest. The ability to communicate scientific ideas to an expert audience, both orally and in writing (including research papers for journals) and to industrial partners. As well as the ability to work under pressure on multiple projects with tight deadlines. Experience in experimental assessment of the deformation and failure in materials subjected to dynamic loading by means of Split-Hopkinson-Bar and/or gas gun based techniques would be an advantage.

Our research is focused on mechanics of active materials and structures (physically sensitive materials, soft materials, biomaterials and lightweight structures) and biofouling management (biofilm mechanics, biomedical devices and water treatment). We take experimental, theoretical and computational approaches, and seamlessly integrate modern additive manufacture technology (3D printing) with solid mechanics. The projects will have great potential impact in addressing grand engineering challenges, ranging from better urban infrastructure, clean water, air pollution, carbon sequestration to personalized medicine.

Candidates with course or research background in additive manufacture, solid mechanics, structural mechanics/design, mechanics of materials or polymer physics/chemistry are highly encouraged to apply. Proficiency in ABAQUS, SolidWorks or Labview is a plus, but not required. The qualified students (Ph.D. positions) will be provided with full financial support, and systematically trained in clear research paths to be future independent researchers.
