Please support "Theoretical and Applied Mechanics" at Stack Exchange

Hello everyone,

I've proposed a new Stack Exchange site called "Theoretical and Applied Mechanics" for people intersted in mechaics related issues.  The current link is  http://area51.stackexchange.com/proposals/67726/theoretical-and-applied-mechanics?referrer=73mdEQ3M_DdhwHImwznaBQ2

For the proposal to be accepted to go to the next stage the site will need the  following:

- 60 people to follow the site

Journal Club Theme of February 2014: Energy Challenges and Mechanics

Since James Watt, a Scottish inventor, improve the efficiency of steam engine, human civilization relies more and more on a steady supply of energy. The re-rise as an international superpower and the global energy crisis are challenging China and the world. We are at a transitional age. On the one hand, we see the technology advances in exploration and development of oil and gas, a depleting resource; and the growth in handling ageing and decommissioning. On the other hand, we see ideas and plans for new energy structure in the future.

Robust Stability at the Swallowtail Singularity

Consider the set of monic fourth-order real polynomials transformed so that the constant term is one. In the three-dimensional space of the coefficients describing this set, the domain of asymptotic stability is bounded by a surface with the Whitney umbrella singularity. The maximum of the real parts of the roots of these polynomials is globally minimized at the Swallowtail singular point of the discriminant surface of the set corresponding to a negative real root of multiplicity four.

1st International Symposium on Energy Challenges and Mechanics

The first International Symposium on Energy Challenges and Mechanics will take place at Aberdeen, Scotland, UK, on 8-10 July 2014. This symposium is about energy challenges and roles of mechanics as a means for seeking solutions, involving multiple disciplines in technology, science and management. The topics cover both sides; we will look at applications in various energy resources including fossil fuels, and many different forms of renewable energy.
