Fracture Criterion

Choose a channel featured in the header of iMechanica:

This is either a wage question I am asking or a stupid one...

How many fracture criterion do we have and what are they? some of these criterion that I am reading are related or a form of others...For example CTOD (crack tip opening displacement) criterion is related to energy release rate in

" A CTOD-Based Mixed-Mode Fracture Criterion" by Fashang Ma et al.

Any guid or direct help would be much appreciated.

   Thanks for your time

mapped meshing model having a crack in ansys

hi,

i am student of M tech 2nd year and working on fracture mechanics one of the problems i am encoutaring is that my model is a rectangular plate and having a central hole with a crack now problem is that i can not mapped mesh the model in ansys can anyone tell me how to map meshed the model.

Guidelines

Choose a channel featured in the header of iMechanica:

HI all

     I am Karthikeyan pursuing my
M.S in Rotating Machinery Design. Its high time for me to take up the
project. So I decided to take my project in Fracture or Fatigue. I am
interested in Thermal fiels also. So I would like to do my project in
Thermal Fatigue fracture side. So I would like to get your suggestions
and some topics to take out work.

    I am
interested in coding also so if anybody give guidelines to develop an
element for this analysis then I will be grateful for them.

With Regards

Cohesive zone modeling

I am trying to use cohesive zone modeling for bimaterial fracture in ANSYS, but I have some problem while inputing the data. Can anybody suggest how to use cohesive zone modeling in ANSYS.

End Notched Flexure Problem

Hi

I want to model an End Notched Flexure (ENF) specimen in ABAQUS for
studying the mode II fracture behaviour in laminated composites.

I have modeled the problem using shell elements and continuum shell
elements.

To prevent the two legs from penetration, I have examined almost all
of connector types (in ABAQUS/CAE) and also contact types but the
results have not been satisfactory.

At this moment I don't have any idea about what to do.

Can anybody help me in this regard?

Best Regards

Kamyar

Question regarding applicability of J-integral in LEFM

Taxonomy upgrade extras:

hi,

I am a Student of 2 year M. Tech. studying in S. V. National Institute of Technology, Surat. My name is Zoeb K Lakdawala. My topic for disseration is ''Implemenation of Fracture Mechanics on Pressure Vessels". In my disseration I want to develop a code on fracture mechanics and compare it with standard Packages like ANSYS & ABAQUS

However, going through the books I have found that in

1. Plane Strain Mode the thickness of the material is very high

Crack movie

Hello

I would like to ask if any one knows, what program I could use to make some *.avi movie from crack made in FRANC3D? I saw a movie called gear_movie.avi, which I found on Cornell www site and I would like to make similar movie. I'm writing a master thesis on subject in which I have to visualizate a crack.

Please help me!

XFEM in fluid saturated medium

Choose a channel featured in the header of iMechanica:

Hello!

To describe the crack propagation in a fluid saturated solid I have idea

to combine the Strong Discontinuity (XFEM) with the fluid, but at the micro-scale, which probably means to use (Navier-)Stokes equations or some modification of them.

How to include the surface effect aournd a nano-sized crack

Choose a channel featured in the header of iMechanica:

Dear Mechanicians,

I am reading some papers on the surface effects of nano-sized elements(bars,beams, plates, films) or defects(inhomogeneities, inclusions, cavities) these days. Some researchers have studied the surface effects on the stress state around a circular hole or an elliptic hole. I wonder if there is any research work on the surface effect around a nano-sized crack. Thank you!

Problem with FRANC2D

Good morning

I have problem with modelling cohesive cracks in Franc2D. The problem is that, when I'm trying to use otion move crack I have only three options (STANDard METHod, INTerFaCe METHod and AUOMATIC) to choose from. And in the instruction manual I found that it should be fourth option "COHESiVE METHod" for cohesive crack propagation.

Fracture in Abaqus

Good morning

I'm working in Abaqus on modelling crack propagation. Regards this i have two questions.

1)I would like to ask if it is possible for Abaqus to create automatic propagation in 2D. What should I do to receive the effect. I've defined the crack and in the history Output i've defined the crack initiation criterion. There are no warnings, no errors, and in visualization module the effects are miserable.

Strain energy release rate of beam specimen using J-integral

Hi All,

Are there any good references showing the detailed derivations of elastic strain energy release rate using J-integral instead of differentiating compliance for end notch beam samples : DCB, 3/4 point bend ...? many thanks ...
