The Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at the UCLA Samueli School of Engineering invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant Professor level.

Two fully funded Ph.D. positions are available in the Dynamic Structures Laboratory at Stony Brook University. The intended starting semesters for both is either Spring 2024 or Fall 2024.

One PhD position is available in the Computational Cardiovascular Bioengineering Lab (C2BL) at the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Texas A&M University for Summer/Fall 2024 entry. The position will focus on cardiac imaging, inverse modeling, and machine learning. Candidates with a strong background in mechanics and computational modeling/programming and an interest in cardiovascular medicine are encouraged to send their CV to rezaavaz@tamu.edu.

We are seeking two highly motivated Postdoctoral Fellows with interests in experimental and/or computational studies of dynamic deformation mechanisms of concrete. Successful candidates will be appointed as Postdoctoral Fellows in the Hopkins Extreme Materials Institute (HEMI) at Johns Hopkins University, and will be associated with the Materials Science in Extreme Environments University Research Alliance (MSEE URA). HEMI is an interdisciplinary institute which seeks to develop the science and technology to protect people, structures, and the planet.

Greetings from Lexington, Kentucky! We are an interdisciplinary research group in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at the University of Kentucky. We specialize in the modeling, computation and simulation of materials across multiple length- and time-scales. Our missions include advancing fundamental understanding of materials under different operating environments and making contributions to material design and discovery for diverse applications.

This paper presents an integrated experimental and numerical investigation of the dynamic deployment behavior of Composite thin-walled lenticular tube (CTLT) that wraps around a central hub, with emphasis on the effect of long-term storage. The deployment experiments were performed on the CTLT prototype both before and after it had been stowed for extended storage periods. The results indicate that after being stowed for 6 and 10.5 months the CTLT is deployed slower and the deployment time increases by 8.2% and 15.0%, respectively.

Candidates with strong mechanical engineering background in solid mechanics and analytical works are encouraged to apply. Master degree is required. Experience with FEM software is a must. The successful candidate will develop mathematical models (phase-field, molecular dynamics, DFT) and numerical methods to investigate the origins of chemo-mechanical degradation in battery materials. Beyond batteries, we also have openings to pursue original research on topics related to phase transformations in soft magnetic alloys, shape-memory alloys, and light interactive molecular crystals.

The Nobel laureate Andre Geim made graphene by playing with pencil leads and Scotch tape and coauthored a paper on how to get the Nobel prize the fun way. Before that, he co-authored with his hamster, Ter Tisha, a paper on diamagnetic levitation and demonstrated it on a frog. He was honoured with the Ig Nobel prize for the paper and later became the only person so far who got both the Harvard Ig version and the real Alfred version of the Nobel prize. Geim is one of my favourite scientists, which led me to read the paper
