PhD Position in Computational Crystal Plasticity

The Advaced Computational Materials Engineering Laboratory (ACME Lab), under the Department of Mechanical Engineering at The University of Alabama is seeking qualified candidates for an open PhD position. This position is open to US citizens.

The open position will focus on the development of reduced-order crystal plasticity models through the use of machine learning methods. Sets of training data will be generated through the use of crystal plasticity finite element simulations (using the code FEPX, developed by ACME Lab). Of particular interest is the relationship between crystallographic texture and the macroscopic yield surface of the material. This will be extended to include evolution of the yield surface due to hardening and cyclic deformation.

Students with a BS or MS in Mechanical Engineering or any related STEM field (e.g., physics, mathematics) are welcome to apply. A strong understanding of crystal plasticity and mechanics is not necessary, though some programming experience is desired.
