Please be reminded that this year IMECE runs with two abstract submission deadlines.

If you plan to submit an abstract for a conference proceeding paper, abstract submission deadline is March 7th.

If you plan to submit an abstact for a presentation only, submission deadline is July 15th.

When you submit your abstract to our session, please choose Topic 12-51: Mechanics of Soft Materials. Also, at the end of your abstract, please include a simple statement that “This abstract is intended for the 3D Printed Soft Materials.” This will help us easily find your abstract and assign it to our session. A link for abstract submission can be found here: http://www.asmeconferences.org/IMECE2016/Author/NewAbstract.cfm

The Applied Mechanics Executive Committee (AMD-EC) is pleased to announce the 2016 IMECE student travel award and best paper competition.

Students can self-nominate and are required to send a brief one-page CV, a recommendation letter from the students' advisor, the abstract of a paper accepted for presentation at IMECE in Track 12 or a symposium sponsored by the AMD, and a draft presentation. Please note that, at the time of the award presentation, the applicant must be enrolled full-time in a degree program at a US institution. A faculty member may not endorse more than one student. The nominations will be reviewed by the AMD-EC. Between 10 to 15 students will be selected for travel grants of $1000 each.

The pool of students receiving travel awards will also become eligible to participate in the best paper contest. The top three will be selected for awards of $500, $300 and $200.

Dates:

April 30, 2016: Submit the nominations to Professor B. Balachandran (balab@umd.edu) along with the CVs (one page), abstract (500 words), recommendation letter and a draft presentation (no more than 15 slides).

August 1 (tentative), 2016: Announcement of recipients of the travel awards.

November 1, 2016: Travel awardees submit their final presentations.

Additive manufacturing, also known as 3D printing, offers unique opportunities to explore novel properties and mechanics of soft materials. This session calls papers from research efforts related to soft materials with novel properties realized or created using 3D printing techniques. Specific topics of interest include, but not limited to:

- Soft metametarials with novel properties, such as acoustic properties, negative Poisson’s ratio, etc.
- Printed active composites that achieve its actuation through spatially controlling the allocation of soft active materials
- Novel printing technologies with improved accuracy or with new printable materials
- Design theory or methodology for soft materials that will be realized through 3D printing
- Mechanics of 3D printed materials, such as their constitutive behaviors and fracture behaviors
- Applications of printed soft materials

Please be reminded to submit your abstract by March 7, 2016 to Topic 12-51: Mechanics of Soft Materials to participate in our session. Should you have any questions, please feel free to contact us.
