Advances in electrochemical energy storage and conversion play a critical role in developments required to meet the rising energy demand of the world in a sustainable way. The emerging field of electro-chemo-mechanics, the interplay of mechanics and electrochemistry, is crucial for understanding the coupled physicochemical processes in a wide range of energy technologies, including rechargeable batteries, capacitors, photoelectrochemical cells, electrolyzers, and fuel cells. Electrochemical phenomena influence the mechanical response, for example by inducing deformation and regulating fracture initiation/propagation. Conversely, mechanical phenomena influence electrochemical properties such as device reliability, efficiency, and durability.

Special issues of JEECS (open submission) and AMR (by invitation only) aim to collect original research articles, technology reviews, and comprehensive scientific reviews concerned with recent advances in electro-chemomechanics and its future directions. Topics of interest include theoretical, experimental, and/or computational studies of relevant phenomena across all scales occurring in electrochemical energy storage and conversion.

There is a potential opening for a PhD student in Prof. Nadimpalli’s group at the New Jersey Institute of Technology starting from Fall2017. Candidates with good academic credentials and an interest to work in experimental research projects are encouraged to apply. Ideal candidate should have a master’s degree in mechanical/materials science/aerospace or related field with a good background in Solid Mechanics, Materials Science, and Experimental Methods (including but not limited to SEM, TEM, and nanofabrication methods).

The research work involves understanding the mechanical degradation behavior of lithium-ion battery materials by developing nano/micro or continuum scale experimental techniques and supporting models. The candidate will have opportunitites to collaborate with experimental and theoretical research groups at NJIT and University of Pennsylvania. Interested candidates should contact Prof. Nadimpalli (nadimpal@njit.edu) with a detailed CV as soon as possible.

Regards,
