Submitted by Ravi-Chandar on Wed, 2010-02-17 23:36.The Research Center for Mechanics of Solids, Structures and Materials at the University of Texas at Austin invites applications for two open positions as Post-doctoral Fellow. The specific projects involve (i) the characterization of the constitutive and failure behavior of structural materials (aluminum alloys, steels, titanium alloys and other selected materials) under quasi-static and dynamic conditions, and (ii) the characterizaation and modeling of the dynamic response of metal-matrix composites. These positions are available immediately. Candidates with a strong background in mechanics of solids and structures, and with experience in experimental, analytical, and numerical characterization of material response are invited send their resume and list of references to: Prof. K.

Journal Club Forum for October 15th: Experimental Solid Mechanics at the Nanoscale
Submitted by Ravi-Chandar on Thu, 2008-10-16 03:22.Browsing through past themes, I realize that this is the third time the topic of experimental mechanics at the nanoscale has been highlighted in the jClub forum. There are many problems that require experimental research at the nanoscale that we can do this a few more times without being repetitive. I would like to focus this discussion on the fundamental issue of friction.

Grand Challenges For Engineering
Submitted by Ravi-Chandar on Sat, 2008-04-26 17:01.The US National Academy of Engineering has published a list of Grand Challenges for Engineering. Ths US National Committee on Theoretical and Applied Mechanics is interested in developing a discussion on the implications of these Grand Challenges to the Mechanics community.
Zhigang Suo posted a link to this: http://www.imechanica.org/node/2908; this post will be on the top of the front page for the foreseeable future in to keep this on the "front burner" and to promote discussions within the community. Please look into these Grand Challenge problems and provide your input on this page. Zhigang and I will moderate these discussions and then integrate and distill our thoughts over time.

A blog for the International Journal of Fracture
Submitted by Ravi-Chandar on Wed, 2006-10-25 21:03.I am pleased to announce that a new blolg associated with the International Journal of Fracture has been created by Springer. This is an ambitious project that aims to augment the published version of the papers and to create a dialogue between authors and readers. All articles beginning with the Dec 2004 issue now have a blog entry; ealier volumes will be added as digital processing of information continues. Discussion is not restricted to papers published in the journal, but should relate to the fracture/failure/structural integrity theme/micromechanics. Please see my post of Oct 25, 2006 for a detailed description of the obectives of the blog. I welcome your particpation in this experiment to enhance archival publication.
