Haythornthwaite Foundation and the Applied Mechanics Division - 2014 Research Initiation Grant Awards

This year the Applied Mechanics Division, through the generosity the Haythornthwaite Foundation, awarded five Haythornthwaite Research Initiation Grants.  These grants target university faculty that are at the beginning of their academic careers engaged in research in theoretical and applied mechanics.  The awardees will complete at least a portion of the proposed effort within the next year and report their results in an oral or poster presentation at the IMECE 2015 in Houston, Texas.  The recipients of the 2014 awards were:

Shengqiang Cai
Assistant Professor, University of California
Title:Electro-actuation of Nematic Liquid Crystal Elastomers

Sevan Goenezen
Assistant Professor, Texas A&M University
Title: Feasibility to Characterize Heterogeneous Subsurface Material Properties from Surface Deformations

David L. Henann
Assistant Professor, Brown University
Title:Toward predictive models of real-world granular flows

Hongyan Yuan
Assistant Professor, University of Rhode Island
Title:A mechanobiochemical model of cell--
microenvironment interactions for rational design in tissue engineering

Kejie Zhao
Assistant Professor, Purdue University
Title:Chemomechanics of Electrodes in Li-ion Batteries Probed by In situ Nanoindentation

The Robert M. and Mary Haythornthwaite Foundation has been a generous supporter of the ASME Applied Mechanics Division (AMD).  The Foundation supports scientific research, primarily research in the field of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics. Robert Haythornthwaite was founder and first President of the American Academy of Mechanics. Additional information about the Foundation can be found at: http://www.haythornthwaite.org
