Ask for help with the prospect of studying on fatigue and fracture

Dear My friends:

I am a postgraduate students learning the fatigue and fracture problem in southwest jiaotong university. I am not familiar with the nowadays' hot topics on the study of fatigue and fracture.  Cause our research group pays much attention on the basic and traditional fatigue and fracture problem, especially on the CAT (computer aided testing). So i received a wide basic knowledges about the fatigue and fracture issues as well as a great progress in my operant skill. I want to promote my study into the hot issues in solid mechanics or some relative fields. So my questions are as follows.

Firstly, is the traditional study on the fatigue and fracture out of date?

Secondly, if it is true, so what are these hot researches on the fatigue and fracture issues?

Lastly, is there any information about the applicant of studying abroad in the field of mechanics?

Any ideas and suggestions would be appreciated. I am looking forward your help deeply!

Quitters never win, and winners never quit.

There are still some hot subjects in these fields: like fatigue crack initiation (and especially the modelling part). Moving through different length scales is also quite hot topic lately... Then these disciplines always interfere with other disciplines. Like fracture and fatigue resistance of nuclear components, wind turbine components (creep effects : fatigue at high temperature).. Fracture initiation and evolution using real time measures is also of great interest... It is just that know the cracks are studied in smaller scales. Optical microscopes, SEM equipment are used to capture nano, microcracks... Modelling on the other side is a bit behind and computational model are still quite slow if you move in such scales..

You may also work on composites, but thats another discussion...

So as you see there are many thinks that someone can work in these disciplines.. All it matters is what is your interest...You could read several papers on these aspects. and see what is of interest to you.. See some research groups etc...

 Regards,

      Panos
