You
will deliver high-quality and research-led teaching at both
undergraduate and postgraduate level and contribute to the research
record of the School through commitment to carrying out research leading
to the publishing of work in high-quality journals. Moreover, you will
achieve recognisable outputs in the areas of teaching, research, and
industrial collaboration, commensurate with School’s norms; contribute
to the enhancement of the national and international profile of the
School; and achieve recognisable impact upon the academic, commercial,
and professional communities as well as contribute to the research
portfolio and further development of the Institute of Mechanics and
Advanced Materials, and, more generally, the Mechanics, Materials and
Manufacturing Theme in the School of Engineering.
 
You should
have an established expertise and a proven portfolio of research in
Computational Sciences, in particular Computational Mechanics. Evidence
of cross-linked research at the interface between computational,
experimental and theoretical mechanics will be a plus.
 
This position is an open-ended, full-time position of 35 hours per week.

Salary:

£30424 – £36298 per annum (Grade 6)
£38522 - £44607 per annum (Grade 7)
£45941 - £53233 per annum (Grade 8)

Job Description

  • To conduct research within the area and contribute to the
    overall internationally recognised research performance of the School
    and its Research Institutes by the production of measurable outputs
    including bidding for funding, publishing in leading academic journals
    and (high-impact) conferences, and the recruitment and supervision of
    postgraduate research students  (All Grades).
  • To engage in research and publication, aiming for
    international journals (Grade 6), publish research findings in high
    quality peer-reviewed journals (Grade 7), high quality research
    publications in leading international journals (Grade 8).
  • To develop research objectives and proposals for your own
    or joint research including research funding proposals (Grade 6),
    independently develop research objectives, projects or proposals for own
    or joint research including research funding (Grade 7), or contribute
    to and / or lead successful bids for funding (Grade 8).
  • To give conference / seminar papers at local, national and
    international level (Grade 6), develop research networks through regular
    national / international conference / seminar presentations (Grade 7),
    give invited addresses to professional meetings and conferences (Grade
    8).
  • To participate in School research activities (All grades).
  • To pursue excellence in research, teaching and enterprise and to inspire others to do the same (All Grades).
  • To design teaching programmes for courses and contribute to
    module development as part of a module team (Grade 6), contribute
    independently to module and curriculum development (Grade 7), or lead on
    degree and module development and delivery (Grade 8) in mechanics and
    mathematics, alongside a range of related engineering subjects in the
    School.
  • To develop skills in assessment methods and in providing constructive feedback to students (Grade 6).
  • To contribute to supervision of research staff as well as PhD (Grades 7 & 8) and MSc students (Grade 6).
  • To deliver teaching and inspire undergraduate and
    postgraduate students under the guidance of a mentor / module leader
    (Grade 6), independently lead modules at undergraduate and postgraduate
    levels (Grade 7) and contribute fully to the management of postgraduate
    teaching (Grade 8).
  • To engage effectively with industrial, commercial and
    public sector organisations, professional institutions, other academic
    institutions etc., regionally and nationally (Grades 6 & 7) and
    internationally (Grade 8) to raise awareness of the School’s profile, to
    cultivate strategically valuable alliances, and to pursue opportunities
    for collaboration across a range of activities. These activities are
    expected to contribute to the School and the enhancement of its
    regional, national, and international profile.
  • To provide academic leadership by co-ordinating the work of
    others to ensure areas of research / degree courses are organised and
    delivered effectively (Grade 8).
  • To be involved in the departmental level strategic planning
    and contribute to wider strategic planning processes in the University
    (Grade 8).
  • To perform duties which will include teaching, lecturing,
    and other forms of scholarship including work associated with
    examinations (setting and marking paper and providing constructive
    feedback to students), administration, participation in committee work,
    and the pastoral care of students of Cardiff University (All Grades).   

Person Specification
Essential Criteria

  • An established expertise and a promising (Grade 6) / proven
    (Grade 7) / excellent (Grade 8) portfolio of research and/or industrial
    experience in Computational, Experimental or/and Theoretical Mechanics.
  • A record of international journal publications (Grades 7
    & 8) in high-impact journals or an ability to demonstrate the
    potential and a commitment to publish in leading journals (Grade 6).
  • Ability to demonstrate potential (Grade 6) and commitment
    (Grades 7 and 8) to competitive research funding. A strong (Grade 7) /
    very strong (Grade 8) portfolio of research grants.
  • Demonstrated leadership potential (Grade 8),
    idea-leadership (Grade 7) and results indicating successful research
    carried out independently (All Grades).
  • Ability to contribute to the delivery and continued
    development of the institute across the School teaching programmes (All
    Grades).
  • An undergraduate degree in Engineering and postgraduate
    degree at PhD level in a related subject area from a leading university
    programme, or relevant industrial experience (All Grades).
  • Evidence of collaborations with industry (All Grades).
  • Teaching experience at undergraduate/postgraduate level (All Grades).
  • Knowledge of current status of research in computational mechanics (All Grades).
  • Working knowledge of computational and analytical techniques for experimental validation. (All Grades).  

Desirable Criteria

  • Relevant professional qualification(s) (All Grades).
  • A creative, innovative, teamworking attitude (All Grades).
  • A proven enthusiastic, self-motivated individual, hence
    able to adapt to the changing requirements of the Higher Education
    community (All Grades).
  • Understanding of the EU computational mechanics context (All Grades).
  • Evidence of ability to participate in and develop both
    internal and external networks and utilise them to enhance the teaching
    and research activities of the School (All Grades).
  • A strong fit with the Institute of Mechanics and Advanced Materials (All Grades).
  • Experience in software development (All Grades).
  • A willingness (All Grades) and ability (Grade 8) to take responsibility for academically related administration.
  • Evidence of impact (Grade 8).   

Additional Information

  • You will undergo personal and professional development that is
    appropriate to and which will enhance performance in the role of
    Lecturer. Such development will include the completion of a 36 month
    University probation period and may include working towards Module 1, 2
    and 3 of the Postgraduate Certificate in University Teaching and
    Learning (Grade 6).
