The Master Machinist requires a creative technical mind to deliver product solutions of the highest quality. The position proposes technical solutions and demonstrates feasibility and value, and leads execution of fabrication projects from initiation to implementation.

Key responsibilities include:
· Lead novel R&D conceptual design events, to define design criteria, develop feasible design concepts, and drive projects through manufacturing and delivery.
· Conceive, develop, prototype and/or test mechanical and electro-opto-mechanical components, assemblies, structures and enclosures.
· Oversee integration, debugging and performance optimization of mechanical, electrical, optical and vacuum subsystems.
· Create and maintain documentation of concepts, designs, tool drawings and fabrication orders in coordination with R&D functions.
· Facilitate the continuous improvement processes and contribute to product design enhancements intended to achieve higher reliability and production quality, embracing a culture of accountability for performance. This includes providing technical assistance to the shops including materials, QC/QA, engineering, safety, training of employees and graduate students, etc.
· Develop TIG welding capacities to achieve high quality, reliable, ultra high vacuum fabrications, including issuing certificates of conformity and leak test certificates.
· Establish a metal finishing shop for electro-polishing, passivation and anodizing, mainly aiming for enhanced corrosion resistance, surface preparation and aesthetics.
· Develop and administer stimulating training programs on workshop equipment for users and university students in a “do-it-yourself” encouraging and dynamic atmosphere.
· Work with and help design pressure vessels according to relevant ASME codes.

To be successful within this role you must have:

A Minimum of an Associate Degree is preferred.
· Around 20 years of pertinent experience and growing responsibilities in high precision prototyping or manufacturing environment with high precision CNC machining, conventional machining, wire and plunge EDM, grinding operations, sheet metal fabrication (specifically, Waterjet and Laser cutting/engraving), and welding (ultra-high vacuum fabrications, TIG, MIG).
· Demonstrated knowledge and track record in manufacturing operations, engineering design, product development, and technical publication in engineering domain assignments.
· Proven analytical engineering skills and practical experience in at least 75% of the following areas: Mechanical Vibrations and Dynamics, FEA, Machine Design, Statics and Hydraulics, Fluid Dynamics, Heat Transfer, and Pneumatics.
· Experience in electro-mechanical systems is required. Expertise in manufacturing vacuum components and chambers is needed. Knowledge in optical systems is a plus.
· Proficiency in rapid prototyping 3-D printing, SolidWorks 2013, MasterCAM X6, multi-axis CNC/CAM programming, reverse engineering and simulation software.
· Hands-on experience in metrology (GD&T and CMM) is required.
