Theme Articles on Frontiers and Current Applications in Elasticity
Guest editor: Heng Xiao
Preface: The elasticity, viz., the deformation recoverability without energy dissipation, is known as a basic aspect in various deformation behaviors of solid materials. Typical examples are small and large elastic deformations characteristic of hard solids (e.g., metals) and soft solids (e.g., elastomers), respectively. The theory of elasticity for both small and finite deformation cases plays basic roles not only in the study of elastic behavior in its own right but also in modeling various inelastic behaviors. Developments and current applications in elasticity may cover widely ranging topics in various fields. It is the objective of this thematic issue to bring together results of current interest in certain respects, including analytic solutions for initial and boundary value problems; investigations into significant stable states and dynamic responses of structures made of either soft materials or layered piezoelectric materials; coupled photo-elasticity effects; thermo-elastic solid-solid phase transitions in shape memory alloys; certain basic aspects in finite elasticity, as well as determination of hyper-elastic constitutive equations for multi-axial large deformation elastic behavior of elastomers, etc.
Most of the contributions were solicited from those researchers who have been invited for a symposium in memory of Professor Dr. Guo Zhong-Heng (1933–1993), organized by Professors Guo Xing-Ming (Shanghai University), Huo Yong-Zhong (Fudan University), Zheng Quan-Shui (Tsing-Hua University) and held in Zhang Jia Jie City, Hunan Province, during August 17–18, 2014, within the program of the 14th Conference for Modern Mathematics and Mechanics. Professor Guo was among the pioneers in the theory of finite strain elasticity. It was he who introduced and initiated the study of nonlinear elasticity in China. Earlier in the 1960s, he obtained two exact solutions for axial and azimuthal finite-amplitude shear oscillations of incompressible elastic cylinders, made a systematic development of the two-point tensor field formulation in large strain kinematics, and presented an in-depth study of the proper definition of objective stress rates, etc. Later in the 1980s–1990s he proposed a unified theory for variational principles in nonlinear elasticity, contributed two modern intrinsic proofs of Hooke’s law in classical linear elasticity, and was the first to obtain exact basis-free expressions for basic rate quantities in finite deformations, including the time rate of the stretch, the spin tensor as well as the stress rate, etc.
In recognition of his pioneering contributions to nonlinear elasticity, we would like to take this opportunity for a remembrance of Professor Dr. Guo Zhong-Heng to express a deep respect for him.
I wish to thank all the contributors for their effort and their time. It is with the kind arrangement by Professor Zheng Quan-Shui, the editor-in-chief of Acta Mechanica Sinica, that substantiated the plan of this thematic issue. In particular, the responsible editorial staff, Mrs. Liu Li, has kindly provided multi-faceted professional assistance and support. All these are gratefully appreciated.
