3 Research Fellowships at University of Southampton for a European Project on Smart Bearings

Looking to take the next step in your academic career? Look no further – three exciting opportunities are available for ambitious researchers to join the UK’s most dynamic research groups for engineering research and education.

You will contribute to a European Clean Sky research project aiming to develop smart bearings for next generation aero-engines (the Ultra High Propulsive Efficiency (UHPE) engine). The research team at University of Southampton will work closely with the industrial collaborator FAG Aerospace (Schaeffler Group) to develop interchangeable smart and conventional bearings. The ‘smart bearings’ will integrate advanced sensors, energy harvesters and wireless communication, as well as develop big data and analytics for intelligent bearing fault detection and life prediction. Three Research Fellows are sought to take up separate challenges in developing the smart bearing systems (to be defined based on candidates’ experience and abilities).

To be successful you will need to work well in a team and with industrial contacts meeting critical deadlines, have a track record of producing peer-reviewed publications in relevant areas (e.g. sensors, energy harvesting, wireless communication, bearing monitoring or signal processing, etc.). The ability to supervise PhD research and generate research income would be desirable, but not essential. You will need to have a PhD or equivalent in mechanical engineering, electronic and computing sciences with significant experience in the above mentioned research areas.

Applications will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification.  The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon completion of PhD.  Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.

The University of Southampton is an institution in the top one per cent of world universities* and one of the UK’s top 15 research-intensive universities.  We have an international reputation for research, teaching and enterprise.

The three posts will be split into two faculties (Faculty of Engineering and the Environment and Faculty of Physical Sciences and Engineering). Both Faculties offer exceptional research facilities, e.g. in the areas of nano- and micro-fabrication, sensor development, tribology and bearing research.

Please note, if you are applying for the part time post we are not able to offer a certificate of sponsorship for this role.
