ROLE SYNOPSIS

Baker Hughes Technology Group is seeking an experienced Computational Mechanics expert with strong Mechanical Engineering background to advance science of drilling through analysis, modeling, lab testing, design, and development of novel technologies to improve Drill Bit performance.

 

Baker Hughes Drill Bits Technology group is seeking an experienced Computational Mechanics Research Engineer with strong Applied Mechanics background and expertise in technical software development to develop next generation of modeling tools. With a strong understanding of physics and exceptional numerical modeling and software development skills, this position will play a key role in advancing computational modeling capabilities that improve Drill Bit performance.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES/ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • The Sr. Computational Mechanics Research Engineer will focus on numerical modeling of drilling mechanics and bit dynamics problems for the Drill Bits product line
  • Own and lead the development of drilling modeling software
  • Develop software design and architecture for the next generation modeling tools
  • Work closely with product development, lab services, engineering, and field operations to understand requirements and gather feedback
  • Coordinate with testing services group to design and conduct tests on industry leading facilities to validate predictions
  • Deploy software to large number of users and follow up with support and improvements
  • Apply scientific approach to identify and investigate challenging drilling mechanics and system dynamics problems and advance the fundamental knowledge
  • Conceptualize, design, build, and test prototypes of novel drill bit technologies
  • Brainstorm and develop innovative solutions that bring value to our business and to our customers

 

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS

  • Doctoral Degree in Computational Mechanics or related disciplines with a focus on solid mechanics, nonlinear dynamics, numerical methods, and high-performance computing
  • 6+ years of experience conducting research in O&G drilling mechanics and bit dynamics
  • Hands-on experience designing, conducting, and interpreting tests in the laboratory and the field
  • 5+ years of experience developing mathematical models of physical systems and implementing numerical methods to simulate nonlinear problems
  • Ability to develop robust algorithms for discrete representation of complex 3D geometries and their interactions
  • 5+ years of experience designing, developing, and deploying large scale computer software to simulate complex physical phenomena
  • Exceptional object oriented programming skills with experience developing modular and robust software architectures to facilitate large scale computing and long term growth
  • Experience designing GUI and graphics display to deliver a rich user experience
  • Hands-on experience configuring applications on high-performance compute clusters
  • Strong skills with data analysis and interpretation techniques
  • Strong desire to develop innovative solutions from concept to full scale testing
  • Passion to develop fundamental understanding of physical problems
  • Strong drive to take on challenges with or without direction
  • Ability to build peer relationships as well as work independently
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Problem-solving skills with a drive for results
  • Must be action oriented, ethical in value, and have a strong customer focus

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS

  • Previous experience developing drill bit dynamics software is preferred

 

OTHER DETAILS

  • Successful candidate will be authorized to work in the US.
  • 10 – 15 % travel required for this role.
