We see tremendous opportunities in continuing to expand the use of lightweight, infinitely recyclable aluminum to help our customers achieve their sustainability goals and provide consumers the environmentally friendly products they enjoy.DescriptionRole Overview:The Lead Metallurgical Modeling Scientist is a key member of Novelis’ global core R&D organization, taking overall responsibility for leading the development and deployment of materials modeling capability within Novelis to accelerate new product and process development, and discovery projects. A major focus is Integrated Computational Materials Engineering (ICME) or Through-Process Modeling (TPM), as applied to Novelis’ products and their manufacturing processes. This largely involves use of physically-based models to predict metallurgical evolution within Novelis’ process streams as well as those of its customers, and the consequent impact on product performance. Also however, a growing focus of the role will be the exploration and deployment of new complementary data science and artificial intelligence approaches to Novelis’ materials-related challenges in order to gain disruptive insights or move to new design spaces. The role will involve working in and leading multi-disciplinary teams to combine modeling with other approaches for maximum impact on the speed and depth of our materials research. Responsibilities:

• Act as company-wide subject matter expert for materials modeling in support of global R&D projects.
• Establish and pursue roadmap for advanced materials modeling within Novelis to provide capability which will guide and accelerate its transformational goals.
• Define and lead projects to develop and apply advanced models to address critical product and process development challenges.
• Partner with wide range of other internal specialists, e.g., in product metallurgy, rolling process, finite element modeling and manufacturing.
• Establish and lead supporting partnerships with universities and other external organizations.
• Support wider adoption and application of metallurgical modeling tools amongst other specialists.
• Lead and guide associated experimental programs which provide supporting data or understanding critical to model development.

 Qualifications:

• PhD in metallurgy, metallurgical engineering or materials science/engineering with a metallurgical modeling focus.
• Minimum typical experience of 5-7 years in metallurgical modeling after PhD completion gained in industrial R&D or in partnership with industry.
• Good balance of modeling and experimental experience with ability to combine these complementary approaches for maximum impact.
• Experience in application of data science methods to complement physically-based approaches would be an advantage.
• Technical leadership experience in R&D setting with demonstration of good project management skills.
• Broad science and engineering background and ability to connect knowledge across multiple disciplines.
• Capability to thrive in team environment, communicate well, and to engage and influence wide variety of stakeholders throughout organization.
• International outlook and desire to travel to other Novelis or customer locations.

This location serves as the central point for all of Novelis’ technical activities worldwide, including R&D, engineering, and environmental, health and safety.
