Role Overview:The Lead Metallurgical Scientist is a key member of the metallurgy group within Novelis’ global core R&D organization. Working as part of the group’s management team, they play an important part in helping to develop the talent and specialist capabilities which underpin the success of key product and process development projects. They also act as a key resource within Novelis’ global technology network by contributing expertise related to the impact of alloying and processing on microstructure and properties, and on product performance in customer operations and applications. Partnering with colleagues in research and in manufacturing, or working with customers and outside organizations, the job-holder will strive to turn innovative science and technology into robust, working solutions. There will be opportunity to travel and to collaborate with Novelis’ plants and regional research and technology centers around the globe. The role provides significant opportunity for technical and team leadership, and a real chance to impact the future success of Novelis’ global businesses. Responsibilities:

  • Manage and support a team of metallurgical research scientists and engineers.
  • Grow and enhance the team’s metallurgical strength through people and capability development.
  • Lead development and deployment of advanced techniques and methods to tackle applied materials challenges.
  • Act as technical specialist and technical leader in projects focused on the development of superior aluminum sheet products and processes.
  • Propose ideas for innovation projects and novel materials solutions and pursue them in collaboration with others.

 Qualifications: 

  • PhD in metallurgy, metallurgical engineering or materials science/engineering.
  • At least 7 years research experience gained after PhD completion in an industrial R&D environment, or working in close partnership with industry, with a strong focus on physical metallurgy.
  • Specific experience related to aluminum products for application in the markets noted above would be a distinct advantage, although applicants with relevant research experience in steels or other metals would also be considered.
  • Proven project management experience and skills with a track record of technical leadership in an R&D setting.
  • Previous experience of managing people.
  • Experience of successful collaboration with internal and/or external customers to implement technical solutions and innovations.
  • Capability to thrive in a team environment, communicate well and to engage and influence a wide variety of stakeholders throughout the organization.
  • Broad science and engineering background and ability to apply knowledge from multiple disciplines to solve problems.
  • International outlook and desire to travel to other Novelis or customer locations.

 Facilities, Amenities or Infrastructure:The Novelis Global Research & Technology Center (NGRTC) is located in Kennesaw, Georgia, and serves as the global hub for Novelis’ extensive research and development activities. This location serves as the central point for all of Novelis’ technical activities worldwide, including R&D, engineering, and environmental, health and safety. Areas of Focus: - Automotive – Testing of formability, surface treatments, tailoring methods, assembly, process speed and stability, metallurgy, recycling, cleaning, pre-treatment, bonding, joining and modeling - Beverage Cans – Fundamental research, enabling development, product and process innovation, technical assistance and analytical services and engineering, design and modeling services for can forming, full can pilot line - Specialties – Testing of durability, heat transfer, design flexibility, surface finishes, weight and strength, cost, lifecycle carbon footprint, recycling, cleaning and pre-treatment - Rolling – Plant problem solving, assessment of global standards, training innovation, pilot rolling facility and modeling Site Capabilities: - Materials development and testing laboratories - Beverage can production pilot line - Hot and Cold aluminum rolling mill - Surface treatment pilot line for finishing automotive aluminum sheet
